Raritan Valley Community College's Science & Engineering department is currently accepting applications for a Part-Time Instructor to teach Environmental Science and Geology courses for the upcoming semester and beyond.
The Following Courses May Be Included- Introduction to Geology: This course studies the earth's structure, composition and history; processes shaping the earth's surface (glaciation, crustal movements and tectonics, erosion, sedimentation); fossil study; rock classification; applied geology of mineral, energy, water and ocean resources; and natural hazards. Laboratory activities include rock classification, air photo and topographic map interpretation, practical problems in environmental geology, and field trips in New Jersey.
- Plants, Humans and the Environment: This course explores the relationship between plants, people and the environment. Lectures cover cultural, economic and political significance of plants to human societies, and the effects of human activities on plants and the environment. Labs introduce current and historical uses of plants (food, fuel, shelter, fiber, dyes) in New Jersey and globally. Students will go on field trips to local natural areas, farms and wineries.
- Introduction to Environmental Studies: This course introduces environmental studies. Students will learn to apply concepts from biological, physical, social sciences and humanities to understand environmental problems and what can be done to address them. Students will relate these concepts to their own lives from global and local perspectives.
- Energy, The Environment and Climate Change: Introduces energy issues related to generation options, utilization and environmental impacts. Topics include traditional carbon-based energy sources, nuclear options and sustainable energy technologies (solar, wind, biofuels, hydrogen). The link between energy and climate change is examined, with environmental consequences of energy choices discussed at local and global scales. Topics are evaluated by applying basic scientific principles to real-world problems.
Existing and potential energy policy options at international, national, state and local levels are explored.
- Master's Degree in discipline or closely related field, required.
- Prior teaching experience required.
