Job Description

The First Steps Basic English program is an 18-month pilot initiative designed to assist beginner English-language learners in Somerset County. Funded by the Somerset County Board of Commissioners through the American Rescue Plan, this program offers free adult literacy classes to those just beginning their English language journey. The program is part of a broader effort to enhance literacy skills among adults in Hunterdon and Somerset counties.

We are seeking enthusiastic and dedicated English Instructors to teach beginner English classes as part of the First Steps Basic English program. Instructors will provide in-person instruction at various locations across Somerset County, including libraries in Raritan Borough, Franklin Township, Bound Brook, Bernardsville, North Plainfield, and Manville. Classes will be held twice a week, with each location offering classes on different days and times.

Duties
  • Instruction:
    Deliver high-quality, engaging English language instruction to adult learners at the beginner level, focusing on foundational language skills.
  • Class Preparation:
    Develop lesson plans and instructional materials tailored to the needs of beginner English-language learners. Utilize the Burlington English platform to enhance instruction and track student progress.
  • Assessment:
    Conduct assessments to gauge student progress and adjust instruction as needed. Administer placement tests in collaboration with program coordinators.
  • Student Support:
    Provide individualized support to students to address their learning needs and challenges. Assist students in navigating and utilizing the Burlington English platform effectively.
  • Collaboration:

    Work closely with the Literacy Navigator and other program staff to ensure seamless integration of literacy and support services.
  • Reporting:
    Maintain accurate records of attendance, progress, and student performance. Provide feedback and reports as required by the program.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Education, English, TESOL, or a related field preferred. Certification in ESL or TEFL is preferred, but not required.
  • Previous experience teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) to adults is highly favorable.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to create a supportive and engaging learning environment.
  • Proficiency in using the Burlington English platform for instruction and student management.
  • Ability to teach at various times and locations as required by the program.
  • Familiarity with adult learning principles and beginner English language instruction.
Additional Information

Instructors will be required to travel within Somerset County.

Classes are scheduled to run twice a week, with evenings opportunities in certain areas.
