The Physician Medical Director provides overall medical leadership and clinical oversight for inmate healthcare services at the Mercer County Correction Center. This role is responsible for ensuring high-quality, compliant, and patient-centered medical care for incarcerated individuals while supervising clinical staff and coordinating healthcare services with County leadership.
The Medical Director will oversee intake evaluations, sick-call services, treatment planning, off-site referrals, and regulatory compliance, ensuring all medical services align with New Jersey correctional healthcare standards and best practices.
Key Responsibilities Medical Leadership & Oversight- Provide comprehensive medical oversight for all inmate healthcare services.
- Establish and maintain clinical standards, protocols, and quality benchmarks.
- Serve as the primary medical authority for correctional healthcare operations.
- Conduct intake medical evaluations and sick-call examinations.
- Diagnose and treat acute and chronic medical conditions.
- Authorize and coordinate off-site specialty care and hospital transfers when required.
- Ensure continuity of care across all levels of inmate medical services.
- Supervise and provide clinical direction to physicians, nurses, and allied healthcare staff.
- Collaborate with mental health providers, correctional staff, and County administrators.
- Participate in interdisciplinary meetings and operational planning.
- Ensure compliance with New Jersey correctional healthcare regulations and standards.
- Oversee clinical documentation, audits, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Address medical grievances and participate in corrective action planning when needed.
- Coordinate healthcare services with County personnel and external providers.
- Provide medical leadership input for operational planning and policy development.
- Support reporting requirements and regulatory reviews.
Education: Medical Degree: Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO)
Licensure: Active and unrestricted New Jersey Physician License (Required)
Experience- Minimum 3 years of correctional healthcare experience, including:
- Clinical medical care
- Administrative and leadership responsibilities
- Experience supervising clinical staff in institutional or correctional settings
- Correctional healthcare leadership
- Medical oversight & clinical governance
- Intake and sick-call medical evaluations
- Staff supervision & interdisciplinary collaboration
- Regulatory and compliance management

- Strong clinical documentation and communication
- Ability to work effectively in a secure correctional environment
- NJ-licensed Physician with proven correctional healthcare leadership experience
- Strong understanding of correctional medical standards and compliance requirements
- Comfortable working 100% onsite within a correctional facility
- Organized, decisive, and capable of managing complex medical operations
