Responsibilities
At the New Iberia Research Center, the Clinical Veterinarian, Nonhuman Primate, will play a crucial role in providing therapeutic, surgical, and diagnostic support to our nonhuman primate breeder programs. This position involves evaluating the health of nonhuman primates and ensuring their well-being on various research protocols, including safety, pharmacokinetic, and efficacy studies conducted in collaboration with the biotechnological and pharmaceutical industry.
Additionally, the Clinical Veterinarian will be responsible for mentoring and providing guidance to students, residents, visiting veterinarians, and clinical veterinary technicians in the principles and application of nonhuman primate medicine.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide expert veterinary care, including diagnosis, treatment, and surgical interventions, for nonhuman primates within breeder programs.
- Regularly evaluate and monitor the health of nonhuman primates participating in research protocols, ensuring their well-being and compliance with animal welfare standards.
- Assist with biotechnological and pharmaceutical industry partners on research projects involving nonhuman primates, contributing to safety, pharmacokinetic, and efficacy assessments.
- Offer guidance, support, and instruction to students, residents, visiting veterinarians, and clinical veterinary technicians in the principles and best practices of nonhuman primate medicine.
- Maintain detailed and accurate records of clinical cases, procedures, and treatments, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
- Be available for on-call duties and respond to emergencies involving nonhuman primates as needed.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, and ethical standards governing the care and use of nonhuman primates in research.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- DVM/VMD from an AVMA-accredited school of veterinary medicine
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with non-human primates, though training will be provided
- A highly motivated, self-starter individual is sought.
- Interpersonal/communication skills are essential.
