Summary

Goodwill Store Associates may be trained on all non‑management aspects of store operations. Under general supervision of the Store Manager or manager‑in‑charge, the Associate assists in overall store operations, including receiving and processing donations, completing sales transactions on the POS system, displaying items, and maintaining the store environment.

Special Requirements

Will typically be required to work regular weekend (Saturday, Sunday), holiday, and evening hours customary to the retail trade.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Store Operations)
  • Sort, price, and display quality merchandise for sale in the store; meet quality and quantity production standards to maximize sales revenue.
  • Properly discard unsellable merchandise into appropriate containers (Outlet, Salvage, Trash, etc.).
  • Apply Goodwill processing techniques to maximize used goods, including sorting, preparing, and pricing items.
  • Follow the store rotation schedule by completing pulls at scheduled times in assigned areas.
  • Provide timely and courteous customer service to shoppers, donors, and employees; be available for telephone customer relations activities.
  • Maintain sales floor appearance, cleanliness, and overall shopping environment (floor care, fitting rooms, cash register areas, aisles, trash receptacles, lights, restrooms, glass showcases, window ledges, doors, odor control).
  • Assist with general light maintenance on immediate grounds (building exterior, parking lot, windows, doors, sidewalks, parking lot lights, dumpster area, landscaping, shopping carts, store entry, signage).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Customer Service)
  • Assist shoppers on the sales floor in locating and selecting merchandise.
  • Complete sales transactions on the POS system with accuracy and in a timely manner.
  • Accept donations from donors by greeting them at vehicles and assisting to carry donated items into the store; always offer a receipt.
  • Assist shoppers by carrying larger, heavier items to their vehicles after sales transactions, as appropriate.
  • Demonstrate good judgment at the cash wrap by protecting Agency assets such as cash and jewelry.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Safety, Security and Loss Prevention)
  • Maintain store premises to keep clean and free of safety hazards; adhere to all safety, health and emergency procedures.
  • Utilize designated staging area for “Z” racks and keep aisles, corridors, and production areas free of clutter.
  • Secure sharp objects and handle breakable objects carefully and properly display them.
  • Utilize required PPE when completing assigned tasks; spread ice melt on sidewalks and pathways when hazardous, shovel sidewalks, loading docks, and donor area as needed.
  • Report observations or suspicions of theft and other wrongdoing.
  • Assist with proper loading/unloading of trucks; use seals and documentation on internal transfer memos per Agency procedures.
  • Perform other related essential duties as required by supervisor.
Requirements – Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or GED preferred; one to three months related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Students under 18 may be hired for part‑time positions but may not operate heavy equipment and must comply with CT DOL regulations on minors.

Language

Skills:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; ability to communicate with customers in one‑on‑one situations.

Mathematical

Skills:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using whole numbers, fractions, decimals.

Reasoning Ability: Apply common sense to carry out written, oral, or diagram instructions; handle standardized situations with occasional variables.

Other

Skills and Abilities:

Operate hand truck, straddle stacker, electric pallet jack, or other material handling equipment available at the retail location.
