Position: POSTDOC POSITION, GELERNTER LAB, YALE SCHOOL OF MEDICINE, DIVISION OF HUMAN GENETICS IN P

Overview

POSTDOC POSITION, GELERNTER LAB, YALE UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE, DIVISION OF HUMAN GENETICS IN PSYCHIATRY for a highly motivated graduate student to join a productive research group, the Gelernter Lab, working on the genetics of psychiatric illness – especially posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, substance use disorders, and related traits. Work will focus on (a) genetics of posttraumatic stress disorder, suicidality, substance use disorders, depression and anxiety, and many related psychiatric traits.

We have work based in the uniquely-informative Million Veteran Program dataset, and also make use of many other datasets, including our own Yale-Penn sample, Thai sample, and other samples, as well as the UK Biobank, All Of Us , etc; (b) Psychiatric Genomics Consortium projects focusing on substance use disorder genetics but also including depression and anxiety genetics and other PGC-included traits, and (c) studies in non-European populations to increase our understanding of genetics of psychiatric traits in diverse populations.

Projects include NIDA-funded studies on methamphetamine genetics in Thailand; a training project in collaboration with several Thai institutions; a VA-funded, Million Veteran Program-affiliated project in the genetics of PTSD and related traits; studies of epigenetics of psychiatric traits; and studies of whole genome sequence in psychiatric traits. A NIDA-funded study concentrates on cannabis use genetics and PRS prediction of response to THC in a laboratory paradigm, and an NIMH study focuses on depression and anxiety genetics in large biobank samples.

Through these and several other current projects, we have access to large datasets including the Million Veteran Program and the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium; as well as other large biobanks such as the UK Biobank and All Of Us .

The ideal candidate should hold an MD or PhD, and have a strong background in human genetics and/or statistics, including knowledge of genome wide methods, such as GWAS and post-GWAS analysis; and comfort with bioinformatics. This is highly collaborative work, so the candidate should also be able to work cooperatively with peers at Yale and with many other collaborators nationally and internationally;

and be able to bring research to publication. Our research division faculty includes Dr Gelernter, and also Drs Renato Polimanti, Daniel Levey, Janitza Montalvo-Ortiz, Hang Zhou, and Joseph Deak (all prior Gelernter Lab trainees). Start date is flexible.

Applicants should preferably have US citizenship or permanent residency. Please send application (including CV and contact information for at least three references) by email to Prof. Joel Gelernter ernter.
