Responsibilities
  • Clinical Care – The Physician Assistant (PA) or the Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides assessment, triage, and therapeutic management of patient/family needs throughout the disease process as part of an interdisciplinary team. The NP/PA collaborates with supervising/collaborating physicians in accordance with state law and hospital regulations, policy, protocols and clinical pathways and may provide autonomous team-based care. Roles include obtaining medical histories, performing physical examinations, reviewing orders and results, and formulating and managing treatment plans.

    The NP/PA may perform procedures, prescribe treatments and medications within scope of institutional/state guidelines. In some specialties, the NP/PA may have autonomous practice managing certain patient populations. May function as first or second assistant on operative cases within scope and prerequisites. Other duties as needed within departmental goals.
  • Patient Education & Psychosocial Support – Educate patients/families on care and resources in collaboration with supervising physicians. Provide psychosocial support to patients and families in a caring, ethical, and professional manner.
  • Information Management – Ensure appropriate documentation in compliance with hospital and regulatory requirements and protect information from unauthorized access or disclosure.
  • Quality Management – Demonstrate professionalism, compassion, and commitment to patient care; ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and standards.
  • Professional Development – Engage in projects to maintain and advance professional competency; serve as a clinical resource and may provide orientation and mentorship; participate in safety reporting and quality improvement initiatives; may collaborate on research and protocols.
  • Qualifications

    Education – Graduate from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program.

    Experience – Prefer clinical experience as a NP/PA in the given specialty/service line, but none required. APRNs, PAs, CRNAs and CNMs must be appointed to the affiliated medical staff and credentialed. Evidence of current competence via letters of reference may be required during appointment.

    Licensure – Active PA certification (NCCPA), CT PA license, ACLS/BLS as indicated for the position. DEA license if required for pediatric role. PALS/NRP as applicable. Additional licensure/certifications may be required based on position and specialty.
