Clinical Triage Nurse
Smilow Cancer Hospital is seeking a dedicated Clinical Triage Nurse to join our fast‑paced call center environment. The successful candidate will utilize patient‑centered protocols to direct patients to appropriate levels of care while communicating effectively with patients, families, physicians, and support staff.

Responsibilities- Perform telephonic triage to a diverse patient population using clinical protocols and standing orders.
- Collaborate with healthcare clinicians and resources to secure timely response, aiming for one‑call resolution when applicable.
- Use effective communication skills to assess patients and guide next steps.
- Follow up with patients providing test results, education, or triage for medical management of symptoms.
- Apply clinical assessment and communication skills while adhering to established guidelines.
- Follow call management guidelines and document all clinical activity accurately and timely.
- Adapt flexibly to changing situations and reprioritize work as needed.
- Identify needs and recommend quality improvements to create perceived value for customers.
- Maintain strict patient confidentiality.
- Expand knowledge of community resources to assist patients in accessing available resources.
- Work independently and maintain competence in nursing care.
- Obtain all requested clinical documentation.
- Coach, train, and mentor new and existing triage staff and provide feedback to Health Advisors.
- Demonstrate patient service excellence at all times.
- Build and maintain positive relationships with patients and clinical teams; maintain a visible role in clinical practices.
- Perform quality assessments to ensure proficiency in triage nursing skills and adherence to standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education
Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing. RN required. Bachelor’s or master’s degree in nursing preferred.
Experience
3 years of clinical experience in direct patient care required. Triage or ICU/ED experience preferred.
Licensure
Registered Nurse license in the state of Connecticut required. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and Advanced Cardiopulmonary Life Support (ACLS) per departmental policies.
Special Skills
Ability to triage non‑urgent and emergent situations. Working knowledge and ability to apply professional standards of practice. Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills. Must be organized and able to prioritize competing tasks. Basic computer skills; proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and other database programs.
Physical Demand
Work performed both on‑site and remote. Requires ability to operate standard office equipment.
