Under the direction of the Patient Service Manager, the Perioperative Specialty Coordinator (PSC) organizes patient care activities and serves as the primary clinical resource to the Perioperative team in the designated specialty(s) to provide quality nursing care. The PSC supports the overall coordination of the perioperative specialty and actively collaborates with physicians and staff to facilitate the dynamic environment of perioperative services.

demonstrates clinical competence in perioperative services associated with the designated surgical specialty(s). - Staff Engagement — Encourage and mentor to ensure staff competencies; collaboratively engage staff in perioperative specialty; lead staff involvement with physicians associated with the designated specialty; prioritize staffing needs to facilitate the complex environment of perioperative services; collaborate with specialty physicians to promote optimal patient care safety and efficiencies; provide leadership oversight into staffing assignments and competency assessment.
- Quality and Safety:
Accountability / Expectation — Demonstrate knowledge and implement patient safety and quality improvements for the perioperative specialty; exhibit ethical and professional responsibility to contribute to patient care, YNHH, and the patients in perioperative services; foster collaborative practice to promote safety and quality; ensure staff are well prepared to optimally perform clinical accountabilities; maintain an environment to assure specialty readiness for all accreditation and regulatory surveys;
exhibit an open mind to listen, challenge, and influence patient safety and clinical outcomes. - Clinical Care — Serve as the primary physician interface for the designated specialty(s); plan staff and physician education for new equipment and supplies; actively solicit physician and staff input for service line enhancement; provide direct care 50% of the time — or as needed to support staffing; participate in collaboration with management to support the coordination of the overall planning, organization, direction and evaluation of designated perioperative specialty(s);
demonstrate the ability to respond to multiple demands at once, prioritize and delegate appropriate tasks to all perioperative team members to facilitate the efficient and safe transition for all patients; provide leadership to direct staffing needs on a daily basis; collaboratively work with Materials Management and Central Sterile to ensure accuracy of procedural needs. - Financial Management — Oversight of the perioperative throughput including first case start time and turn-around time; provide management of staffing assignments and competency assessment for designated specialty(s); lead specialty services coordination of equipment and supplies to promote optimal cost-efficiencies; engage physicians and staff in the development of capital budgetary requirements.
EDUCATION
Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing. BSN required, or attained within 2 years of start date.
EXPERIENCE
For OR a minimum 2 years perioperative experience with a minimum of 1 year experience in designated specialty field. For PACU a minimum of 2 years peri anesthesia experience and ACLS preferred.
LICENSURE
Current CT state RN licensure and/or eligibility for CT state RN licensure required. Specialty certification preferred.
SPECIAL SKILLS
Demonstrates strong interpersonal communication skills, maintains a high level of customer service, prioritizes needs of department and perioperative specialty, and organizes operational efficiencies.
PHYSICAL DEMAND
Requires prolonged standing; walking; use of sight, hearing, and touch; moving/lifting of patients and equipment.
Additional InformationCandidates must demonstrate clinical competence in periop services.
