Overview

To be part of our organization, every employee should understand and share in the YNHHS Vision, support our Mission, and live our Values. These values—integrity, patient-centered care, respect, accountability, and compassion—must guide what we do, as individuals and professionals, every day.

As an integral member of the Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS) healthcare team, the Registered Professional Nurse (RN) upholds the YNHHS mission, vision, values, and strategic initiatives to provide the highest level of patient-centered care. The RN practices professional nursing within the legal and ethical framework established by the Connecticut Nurse Practice Act, ANA Scope and Standards for Nursing Practice, ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses, and the YNHHS Professional Practice Model.

Responsibilities
  • Standards of Practice: The RN practice is guided by the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice (2015). The RN applies the nursing process: assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The RN establishes and maintains a therapeutic relationship, communicates with patients and the healthcare team, and collaborates with the team to achieve quality outcomes. The RN coordinates care delivery and ensures safe, effective, and evidence-based practice.

Standards of Professional Performance: The ANA Standards (2015) describe competent behavior in ethics, cultural congruence, communication, collaboration, leadership, education, evidence-based practice, quality of practice, and environmental health. The RN demonstrates professionalism appropriate to education and position, maintains ethical standards, practices culturally congruent care, communicates effectively, collaborates with the team, leads within the professional setting, seeks knowledge, integrates evidence, and applies environmental health principles.

  • Qualifications for Practice and Performance: The RN is accountable for professional actions to patients, peers, and society. The RN ensures ethical conduct, respects cultural diversity, communicates effectively, collaborates efficiently, leads appropriately, seeks advanced knowledge, incorporates evidence-based practice into care, evaluates the quality of nursing practice, and utilizes resources effectively while maintaining an environmentally safe setting.
