OverviewReporting to the Senior Director, YSM Executive & Internal Communications, the Associate Director, YSM Executive Communications will oversee and support the development, execution, and ongoing management of Yale School of Medicine’s executive communications, primarily for the Office of the Dean.
The role will lead and develop high-quality written and verbal messages to inform internal and external audiences about YSM’s progress in advancing its clinical, educational, and research missions, and coordinate the distribution of these messages across multiple channels, including email announcements, websites, newsletters, digital monitors, and the school’s staff site (MyYSM). The Associate Director will also support a comprehensive communication program to engage YSM and YNHHS employees in alignment efforts.
As the lead for all YSM-wide internal communications, the Associate Director will manage the email calendar, oversee content development and distribution via Yale Message (Salesforce), and review each communication to ensure quality and compliance with executive communication standards. Responsibilities also include creating and maintaining distribution lists, guiding communications officers on appropriate audiences, and tracking communication success metrics.
In addition, the Associate Director will develop and maintain procedures and guidelines to elevate consistency in style, voice, branding, and formatting across the school, partner with the Director of YSM Communications to educate departmental and administrative unit communications officers, and develop an online resource (Internal/Executive Communications site) for centralized guidelines.
The Associate Director will support key projects for the Dean by gathering, synthesizing, and translating data to articulate key trends, assist with visually appealing presentations and materials for events such as the Dean’s State of the School address and departmental town halls, implement communication plans to create awareness and participation in Dean-sponsored events, and maintain the Office of the Dean’s public website section.
To carry out all responsibilities, critical relationships will be established with leaders, clinicians, faculty, and other stakeholders. The Associate Director will coordinate with these individuals for content, develop messaging, secure timely approvals, and handle embargoed or confidential information with professionalism and discretion.
RequiredSkills and Abilities
- Independent self-starter with outstanding written (editing/writing), verbal, and organizational skills, producing high-quality, up-to-date, accurate content for emails, websites, PowerPoint presentations, newsletters, announcements, brochures, reports, and other media for a variety of audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to develop, execute, and measure the success of comprehensive communications plans; strong interpersonal skills; ability to build relationships with leaders and stakeholders; strong organizational and analytical skills with the capacity to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Exceptional judgment, reliability, and discretion; proficiency in using Yale Message/Salesforce and maintaining distribution lists and electronic mailing list software.
- Demonstrated experience in survey design and analysis; experience supporting crisis communications, working under pressure, and making decisions in fast-paced environments.
- Significant demonstrated ability or strong interest in science, medicine, and health care content.
Skills and Abilities
- Proficiency with graphic design and Adobe Creative Suite software.
- Familiarity with developing, disseminating, and maintaining content in web/intranet content management systems, including YSM’s platform Beatrix.
