Position: Custodian (37.5 Hour) - 3rd Shift (SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE UNIVERSITY) - #260112-0429TC-002

Introduction

Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) is a constituent unit of the Board of Regents for Higher Education (BOR), Connecticut State Colleges and Universities. We are recruiting for a full‑time, third‑shift Custodian position to work on our campus in New Haven, CT. This position is located in the Academics Buildings.

Position Overview

We are hiring a custodial staff member for the night shift (11:00 pm – 7:00 am) to maintain cleanliness and safety across campus facilities.

Duties (Responsibilities)
  • Perform custodial tasks and maintenance of areas such as dormitories, classrooms, offices, auditoriums, wards, kitchens, dining rooms, lavatories, and outdoor areas.
  • Dust, mop, sweep, scrub, strip, wax, and polish floors using appropriate equipment.
  • Wash, dust, and polish glass—including windows, woodwork, walls, furniture, and metal equipment.
  • Make beds; check, mark, store, and issue linens, blankets, and clothing (limited to the individual’s work area).
  • Collect and count soiled laundry; distribute, empty, and sterilize glassware, wash basins, and bedpans.
  • Sweep walkways; collect and dispose of trash.
  • Report needs for repairs; perform minor maintenance; run errands.
  • Inspect buildings for damage and report conditions to the supervisor.
  • Change light bulbs and replace fuses; lubricate or tighten door hinges, drawers, cabinets, etc.; replace ceiling or floor tiles.
  • Remove snow and ice from stairways and walkways; sand and salt them.
  • Move furniture and/or set up classrooms.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Any experience and training that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed above.

Special Requirements

Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits, and/or certifications.

Physical Requirements

Incumbents must have adequate physical strength, stamina, agility, and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class. A physical examination may be required.

Working Conditions

Incumbents may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and may be exposed to risk of injury from equipment and/or individuals.
