Overview
Provides seamless, coordinated and compassionate care at every patient encounter as a Lead Medical Assistant throughout the Smilow Cancer Hospital Ambulatory Clinics. Works directly with Ambulatory Clinical Practice Administrator to assist in facilitating patient flow. Troubleshoots problems with clinical equipment, manages inventory, orders supply and coordinates daily assignments to provide optimal clinician support. Analyzes, plans and implements changes to support the primary mission of providing care to our patients and improvement to clinical operations.
Effectively and appropriately communicates recommendations to management. The Lead Medical Assistant provides support as a traditional medical assistant, flexing and floating as needed (e.g., rooming, measuring and recording vitals, obtaining medical history and otherwise assisting clinical staff during patient visits, etc.), but also provides guidance and instruction to other Medical Assistants within the unit. Serves as a source of information for ongoing training and support issues.
Onboards new medical assistants in the department. Anticipates and prepares for unit operational and clinical needs and adjusts staffing assignments as necessary. Acts as a liaison with appropriate vendors to ensure adequate inventory levels are maintained. Serves as a resource for clinical staff in order to facilitate complex and challenging patient care issues/needs. Escalates issues to appropriate members of the healthcare team.
Skills And Abilities
- Demonstrated ability to lead and orient other medical assistants on proper procedures, workflow and new medical equipment.
- Excellent critical thinking skills with the ability to respond effectively and appropriately when dealing with difficult or sensitive situations.
- Ability to serve as a role model for support staff. Strong communication, professionalism, and reliability.
- Demonstrated ability to distribute assignments to staff and provide guidance and oversight in the workflow and on this work.
- Demonstrated proficiency with medical assisting standards and principles. Proven ability with operational processes in a medical setting.
Skills And Abilities
Oncology experience preferred.
Principal Responsibilities- Instructs and acts as a source of information for a minimum of three Medical Assistants. Serves as a source of information for ongoing training and support issues pertaining to the section. Identifies areas for improvement in workflow, systems, coverage and continuity of care issues. Effectively and appropriately communicates recommendations and suggestions to management. Ensures clinic is running at optimal efficiency and staffed appropriately.
Provides guidance and instruction to medical assistants on ongoing clinic operations. - Ensures staffing levels are sufficient, all examination rooms and clinical areas are appropriately stocked, all equipment is properly maintained and in compliance with requirements. Determines appropriate inventory levels and maintain levels in anticipation of clinic needs.
- Selects, sets up, and maintains medical supplies and equipment. Serves as a resource for medical staff and clinicians in order to resolve patient conflicts and other complex and challenging care issues.
- Prepares patients for continuing care after treatment and ensures continuity of treatment plan. Schedules and coordinates patient and test appointments, as needed. Provides alternative solutions to problems and resolutions to scheduling issues and conflicts.
- Provides physical care and carries out therapeutic and medical regimens. Obtains patient histories and medical information. Assesses, reports and records vital signs and measurements. Collects specimens.
- Observes patients for physical or emotional changes. Reports observations. Facilitates timely processing of referrals for internal and external vendors.
- Coordinates and oversees preceptorship, mentoring, orientation and training for all new medical assistants within the section. Develops training curriculum. Oversees chart preparation and adherence to visit type guidelines to support and improve efficiency for each clinician’s schedule.
- Enters registry data as required and on a timely basis. May provide training and oversight to other medical assistants as registries continue to develop. May provide additional administrative support, including front desk coverage, as directed.
Six years of related work experience, four of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and high school level education; or four years of related work experience and an Associate's degree; or little or no work experience and a Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
