Overview
The Assistant Power Plant Manager supports the overall operation, maintenance, and administration of the power plant to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient energy production. This role assists the Plant Manager in daily plant operations, staff supervision, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement initiatives while helping maintain high standards of safety, environmental responsibility, and operational excellence.
The position focuses on coordinating plant activities, monitoring equipment performance, troubleshooting operational issues, and ensuring adherence to operational procedures and regulatory requirements. The Assistant Power Plant Manager plays a key role in workforce leadership, training, and communication, fostering a culture of safety, accountability, and efficiency.
Additionally, this role contributes to planning and implementing maintenance schedules, outage activities, performance optimization, and cost-control efforts. By collaborating with engineering, maintenance, and operations teams, the Assistant Power Plant Manager helps support long-term plant reliability.
Required
Skills and Abilities
1. Demonstrated technical abilities operating a power plant.
2. Proven knowledge of steam, chilled water equipment, electrical generation, boilers, chillers, gas turbines, and distribution systems.
3. Knowledge of power plant production, fuel consumption data, and emission regulations.
4. Well-developed managerial and supervisory skills, including the ability to provide direction and guidance to plant operators and customer-focused teams.
5. Proven knowledge of centralized maintenance management system (CMMS) and/or other related power plant management systems.
Preferred
Skills and Abilities
Master's degree and experience running a cogeneration or combined heat power plant. Experience working in a union environment.
Principal Responsibilities
1. Supervises the plant operators to insure the safe and reliable delivery of utilities for University facilities and other properties. Supervises the planned maintenance and repair of all plant equipment and distribution systems and coordinates the shutdown of equipment.
2. Supervises the hourly workforce to include hiring, scheduling, employee relations, and discipline. Provides guidance and direction to the hourly workforce to insure that all staff has the opportunity to continually improve their skills and succeed. Implements University policies and procedures related to staff relations. Maintains appropriate records as required.
3. Assists in the management of shift scheduling and payroll functions including resolution of problems.
4. Provides technical expertise for Operations, Maintenance, Plant Controls and Metering for associated equipment and systems including gas turbines, chillers, boilers, and the electrical distribution system. Must understand PLC (Programmable Logic controllers) and DCS Distributed Controls systems.. Directs a team of Mechanics and Control Mechanics to troubleshoot and repair systems.
5. Schedules and oversees work of outside contractors and insures that the work is completed according to contracts and specifications.
6. Provides hands on engineering support for all associated maintenance and will provide on-call emergency response as required. Develops and implements engineering procedures and standard operating procedures (SOPs). 7. Responsible for maintaining a safe work environment and complying with all applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
8. Interacts with internal compliance in implementing protocols enforcing State and Federal emission regulations and in issuing required reports.
9. Participates in the management of the budget, ensuring appropriate expenditures and oversight. 10. Assists in the development and implementation of Plant Policy & Procedures. 11. Initiates staff training programs to improve operating procedures and efficiency. 12. Interacts with vendors, consultants, internal staff, and plant managers. 13. Works closely with the Engineering and Project team on all plant improvement projects. 14.
May perform other duties as assigned. Required
Education and Experience Bachelor's degree in Engineering and seven years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
