Are you an engineering student, graduate, or possess experience in Engineering, and are interested in learning what it's like to work as an engineer with the Connecticut Department of Transportation? The State of Connecticut, Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). accepting applications for paid Seasonal Worker (Professional Engineering) positions in the Bureau of Engineering and Construction. Positions may be based in Newington, New Haven, Norwich, Rocky Hill, or Thomaston.
Positions are open to applicants who are enrolled in a college engineering program or construction management program and have completed their sophomore year.
As a Professional Engineering Summer Worker, you will be exposed to a variety of engineering tasks in transportation design, transportation construction, or a combination of both areas. You will have an opportunity to see firsthand what it’s like to be a Transportation Engineer at the DOT.
Position Highlights- Anticipated start date:
May 2026 - End date:
August 31, 2026 - Monday‑Friday, first shift, 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week
- Temporary locations:
Newington, New Haven, Norwich, Rocky Hill, Thomaston
- A valid driver’s license to drive state vehicles to and from field/construction sites and town meetings
- Ability to use CAD (Micro Station preferred) and other computer applications
- Enrollment in a college engineering program or construction management program, completed sophomore year
- College transcript available upon interview invitation
- Reviewing basic design plans
- Performing mathematical computations and calculations
- Collecting and entering data
- Accompanying engineers on field reviews
- Assisting in construction inspection activities
- Assisting with the preparation of reports
- Performing other related duties as required
Functional Area
- Bridge Design:
Use advanced analysis software and CAD to prepare designs, conduct structural analysis, and create bid documents; design and rehabilitate bridges; review and approve shop drawings; provide construction support and prepare change orders. - Construction Inspection:
Review project plans and specifications; ensure proper materials and construction quality; address construction issues and coordinate with contractors. - Highway Design:
Develop projects to improve safety, capacity, and efficiency; perform geometrics, drainage, and cost‑estimating analyses; present projects to municipalities and the public. - Traffic Engineering:
Develop designs for traffic signals; conduct traffic flow analyses and crash investigations; recommend solutions to improve safety. - Facilities Design:
Provide in‑house and consultant design support for civil, architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering; focus on new construction and renovation of facilities supporting transportation operations.
- Knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures of assigned specialty
- Interpersonal communication and written communication skills
- Ability to assist individuals in self‑care habits and proper social conduct where applicable
- Adequate physical strength and stamina to perform duties
- Supervisory and/or leadership abilities (some positions)
- Academic history indicating interest in transportation or construction engineering
- Experience or coursework performing basic engineering tasks under supervision
- Experience using specific engineering‑related computer software
- Experience presenting to a diverse group of people
- For undergraduates: interest in obtaining Engineer in Training (EIT) licensure after graduation
- For recreational activity assignments: ability to perform emergency first aid; current Standard First Aid Certificate required for some positions.
- For bus driver or vehicle operator assignments: current Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator License.
- Travel may be required.
