Brief Description
The Plant Operator is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation and maintenance of power plant systems and auxiliary equipment in accordance with written plant procedures and under the direction of the Operations Shift Supervisor. This role supports continuous plant operations, equipment reliability, and compliance with all safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements. The Plant Operator may work in coordination with other personnel or contractors as needed to assist with the safe startup, shutdown, and operation of plant machinery.
In the absence of specific instructions, the operator is expected to exercise sound judgment, initiative, and experience while maintaining the highest standards of safety and environmental responsibility.
New Haven Harbor Station is a 453‑MW facility in New Haven, CT, fueled by #6 fuel oil and natural gas, and comprised of a single conventional steam unit. New Haven Peaking is a 144‑MW facility, also utilizing ULSK and natural gas, consisting of three LM6000 simple‑cycle combustion turbines co‑located on the New Haven Harbor Station property.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities- Safely, efficiently, and reliably operate power plant systems in accordance with plant procedures, safety policies, and environmental regulations.
- Operate and monitor boilers, steam turbines, combustion turbines, electrical generation systems, and all associated auxiliary plant equipment during normal and emergency conditions.
- Troubleshoot operational, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, and control system issues; take corrective action to resolve abnormal conditions.
- Calibrate, maintain, and perform minor repairs on plant equipment including pumps, valves, motors, and control components as required.
- Take, record, analyze, and trend electrical, mechanical, and process readings; maintain accurate logs, records, and reports for operational and regulatory purposes.
- Implement plant emergency operating procedures and respond to alarms and abnormal operating conditions quickly and effectively.
- Support and comply with all safety and regulatory programs, including environmental compliance and applicable industry standards (e.g., NERC where applicable).
- Communicate operational status, equipment conditions, and maintenance needs clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Operate company vehicles and mobile equipment safely as required to perform job duties.
- Work independently and exercise sound judgment in the absence of direct supervision while maintaining safety and operational integrity.
- Assist, coordinate, and train other plant personnel or technicians as required.
- Participate in scheduled shift work, including nights, weekends, holidays, and call‑outs as necessary to support continuous plant operations.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support plant operations and reliability.
- Strong working knowledge of power generation processes, including gas turbines, steam systems, electrical generation, and auxiliary equipment.
- Proven troubleshooting and problem‑solving skills across mechanical, electrical, and control systems.
- Ability to interpret operating procedures, technical manuals, drawings, schematics, and control logic.
- Effective oral and written communication skills with the ability to clearly document plant activities and communicate with supervisors and team members.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team in a high‑reliability operating environment.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks, priorities, and changing operational conditions.
- Computer literacy, including proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, email, and other plant or maintenance management systems.
- Mechanical aptitude and hands‑on capability to perform basic maintenance activities safely and efficiently.
- Sound judgment, initiative, and decision‑making skills with a strong commitment to safety and environmental responsibility.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Technical training or military experience in a related field preferred.
- Have or obtain a TWIC card.
- Ability to meet NERC medium requirements.
