Highway Maintainer III (Position #21381)
Compensation$17.81 / hour – $23.39 / hour.
Trainee Status: $17.19 / hour.
Eligible candidates must meet minimum education/experience qualifications within one (1) year of hire date.
SummaryPerforms skilled year‑round highway maintenance activities involving the operation and servicing of complex heavy equipment and machinery, including construction activities and emergency traffic services. Supervises entry‑level personnel and small work crews performing tasks or projects for the NH State Highway System.
Minimum Qualifications- 1 year of education and experience after high school.
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License, Class A (CDL‑A) with appropriate tank endorsement.
- Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) meeting minimum standards.
- Medical card for CDL unless already employed by the State of New Hampshire.
- Negative pre‑employment urinalysis drug screen.
- Ability to lift/carry up to 50 lbs. intermittently.
- Telephone or acceptable means of communication, available 24h/7d.
- Operation of motorized highway equipment (preferred).
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) (required).
- Operates and troubleshoots complex highway maintenance/construction equipment.
- Maintains assigned equipment and performs field adjustments, emergency repairs.
- Observes winter storm road conditions, determines appropriate action.
- Provides training and supervision to entry‑level personnel.
- Supervises, trains, and reviews work of small crews, entry‑level workers, and contractors.
- Performs routine highway and road maintenance in adverse conditions.
- Traverses varying terrain and performs heavy physical labor, including lifting up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis.
- Responds immediately to winter maintenance or traffic emergency activities 24/7.
