Job DescriptionA Fiber Splicer is responsible for splicing, installing, maintaining, repairing, troubleshooting and testing fiber optic cables to ensure high‑quality network performance and reliability. The role requires strong technical skills, meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to work in various outdoor environments.
Responsibilities- Perform splicing tasks in outdoor settings, including aerial, underground, and building entries.
- Read, interpret, and update network maps, splice schematics, and engineering field notes.
- Use equipment such as fusion splicers, OTDRs, power meters, and light sources to ensure optimal network performance.
- Conduct thorough testing and troubleshooting of links to identify and resolve issues such as breaks, bends, or bad splices.
- Ensure compliance with industry standards, company policies, and safety regulations.
- Coordinate with team members and departments to ensure timely and efficient project completion.
- Provide accurate documentation of completed work, including splicing and testing results.
- Participate in on‑call rotation for emergency repairs and maintenance outside normal hours.
- Stay updated on the latest technology and splicing techniques through continuous learning and professional development.
- High school diploma or equivalent; some college or technical school coursework in telecommunications, electronics, or related field preferred.
- Previous experience in splicing, telecommunications, or a similar field is desirable but not required.
- Basic understanding of telecommunications networks.
- Ability to stand, walk, sit, and use hands to handle equipment.
- Ability to reach with hands and arms, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl.
- Ability to lift and carry equipment up to 50 lbs.
- Work outdoors for extended periods and in various outdoor conditions, including heights, confined spaces, and inclement weather.
- Exposure to extreme weather conditions.
- Ability to follow directions and work as part of a team.
- Oral and written communication skills.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Excellent manual dexterity and hand‑eye coordination for precise fiber splicing.
