Cardiopulmonary Nurse Practitioner / Physician Assistant – Huggins Hospital

Apply for the Cardiopulmonary Nurse Practitioner / Physician Assistant role at Huggins Hospital. The Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) provides comprehensive care for patients with cardiac and pulmonary conditions in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Working collaboratively with physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals, the APP delivers advanced clinical assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for patients with acute and chronic cardiopulmonary diseases.

The APP also performs and interprets routine and pharmacologic stress tests and supports the hospital’s cardiopulmonary diagnostic and therapeutic programs.

Responsibilities
  • Evaluate, diagnose, and manage patients with cardiovascular and pulmonary disorders, including heart failure, COPD, asthma, and post‑procedural cardiac follow‑up.
  • Independently perform and monitor cardiac stress tests (exercise and pharmacologic) in coordination with supervising physicians and cardiology partners.
  • Conduct patient histories, physical examinations, and develop treatment plans based on clinical findings and evidence‑based guidelines.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic studies such as ECGs, echocardiograms, pulmonary function tests, chest imaging, and relevant laboratory tests.
  • Provide education and counseling to patients and families regarding cardiopulmonary health, medication management, rehabilitation, and risk‑factor reduction.
  • Collaborate with hospitalists, cardiologists, and respiratory therapists to ensure seamless coordination of care across the continuum.
  • Document patient encounters, procedures, and results in the electronic medical record in compliance with regulatory and institutional standards.
  • Participate in quality improvement, performance monitoring, and data‑driven initiatives to enhance service efficiency and clinical outcomes.
  • Support outpatient clinic coverage and inpatient rounding as needed, including possible weekend or on‑call rotations.
  • Serve as a clinical resource and mentor to nursing and technical staff within the Cardiopulmonary Department.

Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Minimal physical effort required with occasional light lifting to a maximum of 25 pounds; stooping; and pick, pinch, type, or otherwise work primarily with fingers.
  • Ability to effectively manage considerable mental stress.
  • Ability to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word.
  • Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with co‑workers and convey information in a clear, concise and accurate manner.
  • Familiarity with computer and other business machines.
Qualifications
  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program.
  • Licensed by the NH State as an NP or PA.
  • National Certification (AANP, ANCC, or NCCPA).
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications required.
