DescriptionThe CMM Programmer / Inspector is responsible for programming, operating, and supporting coordinate measuring machines (CMM) in a production machine shop environment. This role provides day-to-day inspection support with a strong emphasis on first-piece inspections, in-process checks, and ensuring dimensional compliance with customer and internal requirements. The position plays a critical role in supporting production flow, meeting delivery commitments, and maintaining quality standards.
CMMProgramming & Operation
- Program, set up, and operate AIMS coordinate measuring machines to inspect machined components.
- Develop and optimize CMM programs for new and existing parts to support production and inspection needs.
- Modify and maintain existing CMM programs to reflect engineering changes, tooling updates, or process improvements.
- Troubleshoot CMM programs and measurement issues to ensure reliable and repeatable results.
- Perform and support first-piece inspections to verify dimensional compliance prior to production release.
- Provide timely inspection feedback to production, engineering, and quality teams to minimize downtime and rework.
- Conduct in-process and final inspections as required to support production schedules.
- Assist with part layout inspections, capability studies, and measurement validations.
- Interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, specifications, and inspection requirements.
- Document inspection results accurately and maintain inspection records per quality system requirements.
- Support root cause analysis and corrective actions related to dimensional nonconformances.
- Assist with customer, internal, and third-party audits as needed.
- Work closely with machinists, engineers, and quality personnel to improve manufacturability and inspection efficiency.
- Recommend improvements to inspection methods, fixturing, and measurement strategies.
- Support lean and continuous improvement initiatives related to inspection and quality processes.
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical certification or associate degree preferred.
- Experience programming and operating CMMs in a production machine shop environment.
- Hands-on experience with AIMS CMM software (or similar CMM platform).
- Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints and GD&T.
- Knowledge of precision measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, height gages, indicators, etc.).
- Solid understanding of machining processes and tolerancing.
- Experience supporting high-mix / low-to-medium volume manufacturing.
- Experience with first-article, first-piece, and in-process inspection workflows.
- Familiarity with ISO 9001, AS9100, or similar quality management systems.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently in a fast-paced production environment.
Work Environment Requirements
- Ability to stand/sit for extended periods and work in a manufacturing environment.
- Ability to lift up to 35 lbs (adjust as needed).
- May require flexible shift support depending on production needs.
