Overview

American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service, is seeking one member to contribute to historic preservation projects alongside Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park staff. These opportunities are intended for enthusiastic individuals who possess an interest in gaining experience in the field of historic preservation. No background or previous experience in construction or historic preservation required.

Location

Known as the "National Park for the Arts," Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park celebrates the gardens, home, studio and art of internationally renowned sculptor, Augustus Saint-Gaudens ). The park is in Cornish, New Hampshire, about thirty minutes from Hanover. The park encompasses 190 acres of formal gardens, open fields, and dense forest with twenty historic buildings connected by hiking trails. The site promotes the arts through exhibitions, special events, and programs throughout the summer.

Position Overview

Carpentry projects include historic fence installation, repair/replacement of deck boards, and window repairs on multiple buildings. Projects may involve operating vehicles, painting, using hand tools, and power tools. We will also work on historic trails, assist curatorial staff with statue cleaning/waxing, and build/install exhibits for the art gallery. There may be cross-training with Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller which could include facilities operations, maintenance and repairs.

This placement is designed to facilitate professional development and promote exposure to land management agencies and networking with professionals, including gaining experience in different conservation fields and shadowing different work groups.

Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM

Position Benefits
  • Living Allowance: The ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $720/week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.
  • Housing: A housing allowance of $1,000/month will be provided for the duration of the term.
  • Professional Development Stipend: $1,000 of professional development funds will be available to participants for pre-approved uses.
  • Provided Training/Orientation: ACE members will receive position-specific training and an orientation outlining ACE policies and procedures, clear guidance on prohibited activities, and networks for support.
Qualifications

Required:

  • Remove if non AC
    - Members must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident, as required by U.S. government contracts
  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group.
  • A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request). Members must be 21+ to drive due to ACE's insurance and liability requirements.
  • Willing to undergo and must pass the required criminal history checks
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • ACE Members will need to complete bi-weekly timesheets, beginning of term feedback forms, end of term evaluations and, for longer terms, a mid-term evaluation.
  • Member may not participate in any prohibited activities as listed in the Member Service Agreement.
