The State of New Hampshire, Department of Environmental Services, Water Division, Dam Bureau has a part time vacancy for a Dam Control Operator.

Summary:

Performs routine duties involving the operation and maintenance of dam control devices and assists in conducting lake level surveys to ensure the proper control of flow and levels of Lake Francis in Pittsburg.

YOUR EXPERIENCE COUNTS:

Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience and/or each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/

Experience:

Equivalent combination of 2 years of education and experience after completion of high school.

License/Certification:

Valid driver’s license

Other Requirements:
  • Must have access to transportation for statewide travel
  • Must be physically able to lift and carry material weighing up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis
  • Must be able to perform regular job functions in adverse working conditions such as heavy rain, snow or ice storms
  • Must be able to work during emergencies exclusive of normal working hours, when available
Trainee Option:

Candidates with an equivalent combination of 1+ years of education and experience after completion of high school may be considered and hired in ‘trainee status’ for this position.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience in dam-related construction, maintenance, operation or monitoring, or comparable experience in building and grounds maintenance, landscaping, carpentry, or site construction.

Responsibilities:

Travels throughout the Lake Francis watershed and northern New Hampshire to assist in the operation and maintenance of state-owned dams or dams for which the Department has responsibility as required. Performs routine maintenance operations such as plowing, mowing and brush cutting and operating manually or electrically driven devices to open or close water control structures (gates, stoplogs, flash boards) as directed and based upon observed level of lake and river discharge requirements in comparison to established standards.

Measures or reads a gauge to ascertain water levels and precipitation levels.

Prepares a daily log on lake levels and dam operations. Provides information to the Division office and local, state, and federal agencies as necessary.

Operates and repairs manually or electrically operated devices, including in areas designated as Confined Spaces, to open or close gates based upon observed level of lake, often during severe weather conditions to maintain a desired water level.

Under direction of supervisor and Dam Bureau management, coordinates operations and flow releases from state owned dams with downstream water users, hydroelectric developers, local, state and federal agencies and the general public to provide the status of watershed and Department operations.

In coordination with Dam Bureau Operation and Maintenance staff and supervisor, operates, maintains and performs elementary programming on automated discharge systems and data collection platforms (field computers) and sensors. Inputs data into reservoir routing models (computer application) for use in planning future operations.
