Overview

ACHS is recruiting for several postbaccalaureate premedical individuals for an employment opportunity of up to 14 months as a provider assistant. Mentorship with physicians specializing in family medicine and nonphysician primary care providers is a key feature of this opportunity. Successful candidates will have graduated from a four-year university with all or most premedical requirements satisfied. Intention to matriculate in an MD or DO program is required.

An interest in ultimately practicing within rural health and/or primary care is an asset.

Patient Care Experience

This patient engagement opportunity is designed to be of high educational value for any premedical student committed to our profession. Future physicians are able to develop strong interpersonal skills in patient care by coordinating care, interviewing, scribing, and assisting in office procedures. The job will entail “rooming” patients (interviewing, taking vital signs, collecting samples such as urine specimens), and running CLIA waived tests.

In addition, ACHS will be undergoing a transition of EHRs in the fall of 2026 and a key duty will be to find and transfer historical data and orders from the previous EHR to the new one. In doing so, the employee will become familiar with a wide variety of chronic disease management strategies and preventive medicine. An excellent clinical-based experience, students gain a well-rounded understanding of the health care system by working with providers who deliver high-quality patient care, learning the importance of clerical tasks, and participating in a multidisciplinary team.

The environment of an FQHC provides the opportunity to learn directly from patients how social determinants of health are experienced in the real world.
