Location: Durham

The Assistant Director of Admissions performs duties relevant to the recruitment, admission and counseling of students, resulting in the achievement of enrollment goals established by the University.

Position shares with all other admissions officer position common responsibilities: representing the University to all interested constituencies, reviewing admissions applications, managing recruitment and other recruitment-related duties. This position will also be involved with recruitment, training and leadership of students, parents and alumni for their involvement in off campus recruitment events in addition to off campus counselor programs. This position also has additional responsibilities related to application file review coordination.

Duties/Responsibilities

Territory management and recruitment of new students (45%)
  • Manage an assigned recruitment territory, which includes independent travel to visit students, parents, and counselors in their territory.
  • Schedule meetings and appointments with high schools, students, and other constituencies as well as make hotel, rental car, and other travel arrangements.
  • Meet, speak with, and counsel prospective students, their parents and/or their school counselors to explain pertinent admissions policies and procedures, advise on credentials, answer questions on academic programs and campus life.
  • Conduct group information sessions that promote and explain the admissions process and the University.
  • Represent the University to students, parents, school counseling professionals, and members of the general public through programs on campus, professional organizations, high school visits and participation in college fairs and other college programming.
  • Counsel applicants pre- or post-admission decision, perform essential and necessary duties to develop and maintain relationships with constituencies: program evaluation, SMS, email and written correspondence, phone outreach, etc.
  • Seek to establish collaborations with on and off-campus organizations and offices that focus on the educational advancement of first generation and under-represented students.
  • Collaborate with Access Program on off-campus programming.
  • Schedule meetings and appointments with high schools, students and other constituencies as well as make hotel, rental car and other travel arrangements.
  • Use data and research to understand market and student behaviors and track progress toward established enrollment goals within recruitment territory.
Application review and decisions (45%)
  • Independently read, review, evaluate and process applications for admission, and rule on admittance within established guidelines.
  • Participation in file review committees as assigned (e.g. Competitive Major Committee, Final Transcript Committee, International File Review Committee).
  • Track progress and meet established application review deadlines and goals.
  • Other areas of focus may include: serve on competitive major committee, administer Competitive Major admissions criteria and track progress toward established enrollment goals, partner with international first-year application review team, serve on first year transfer credit group, coordinate with UNH Manchester on dual campus applications.
  • Help recruit, train and oversee seasonal file reviewers, including file review mentoring.
  • Assist in the oversight of GPA calculation process, including hiring, training and supervision of student workers.
  • Help track progress towards file review and app/deposit deadlines and goals.
  • Oversee final transcript review process.
  • Contribute to file review training and preparation of training and file review resources.
  • Assist with review and updating of communications related to file review.
  • Pre-athlete review back up.
  • Other file review related duties and responsibilities, as directed.
General office duties (10%)
  • Participate in the development of admissions policies/procedures.
  • Assist in the supervision of support staff and/or student admissions representatives.
  • Assist in staffing of limited admission events and programs.
  • Contribute to admissions planning, staff supervision, and/or general office management.
  • Participation in other working groups/committees, other tasks as assigned.
Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree and one year of related experience in a counseling/advising position.
Required Licenses & Certifications
  • Valid driver’s license.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent personal computer skills.
  • Significant evening and weekend work required.
  • Willingness to travel as required.
  • Demonstrated commitment and experience working with diverse populations.
  • Familiarity with college and university admissions policies and procedures.
  • Fluency in a language other than English preferred.
