Job SummaryThe position of Assistant Head of School for Academic Affairs, in conjunction with the Head of School at Crossroads Academy, oversees the entire K-8 academic program, engaging in duties that include, but are not limited to scheduling, student discipline, parent relations, teacher recruitment, training, and retention, to curricular review and upgrade. The Assistant Head of School for Academic Affairs works closely with the Head of School and faculty to ensure the effective, age-appropriate delivery of the Core Knowledge and Core Virtues curricula while promoting research-informed instructional practices that serve a range of learners.
Consistent with best practices in small independent schools, this role supports school wide efforts to strengthen understanding of neurodiversity, build faculty capacity through professional learning, and ensure that students with diverse learning profiles are appropriately supported within Crossroads Academy’s mission-driven, academically rigorous environment.
Position Requirements

- Create, deliver, and record a cohesive, well-planned and articulated academic program rooted in Core Knowledge and Core Virtues curricula that is based on strategic and long-term planning for all grades Kindergarten through 8th.
- Ability to work with teachers in all grade levels, Kindergarten through 8th.
- Set and achieve annual professional development goals.
- Has strong interpersonal skills with ability to create and maintain collegial atmosphere of sharing between the lower and middle divisions.
- Demonstrate enthusiasm for school administration and serving children and adolescents in grades K-8.
- Knowledge and experience in supporting neurodiverse learners in small-school settings.
- Knowledge and experience in writing and deploying student support plans, especially related to all types of ADHD and ADD.
- In conjunction with/support of the Learning Specialist, facilitate and interpret student testing with outside agencies.
- Maintain healthy and appropriate boundaries with minor students.
- Assist Head of School with faculty recruitment, retention, evaluations, including annual review of the faculty evaluation process, schedule of faculty for evaluation, observation of class lessons, the generation of written summaries, and meeting with faculty at the conclusion of the process.
- Assist with planning and delivery of faculty training, meetings, and professional development experiences.
- Collaborate with the Assistant Head of School for External Affairs in recruiting and retaining mission-aligned families, effectively employing programming and messaging strategies, and articulating the division’s strengths and attributes to prospective families.
- Solve problems or address issues that require immediate attention and may be crisis situations, such as faculty complaints and grievances.
- Coordinate all standardized testing in conjunction with the Head of School including analyzing data and reporting results to various constituencies.
- Edit student reports and school documents as needed.
- Serve as a resource for student behavioral and learning concerns.
- Arrange for substitutes as needed.
- Assist the Administrative Team in planning and implementing new employee orientation per school calendar.
- Attend weekly administrative meetings and join committees as required.
- Provide updates for related portions of the Parent & Student Handbook.
- Write monthly Board Report and Quarterly Reports.
- Approve faculty/classroom purchases and oversee budgets.
- Respond in a timely manner to voicemail, email, and mail.
- Other duties, as requested by Head of School.
- Ability to identify learning gaps and devise effective strategies and solutions.
- Knowledge of learning theories and instructional design models.
