Position: BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION FOREMAN
Location: Ossipee

Overview

The State of New Hampshire, Department of Transportation, Bureau of Bridge Maintenance has a full-time vacancy for a Bridge Construction Foreman
.

Summary:

Responsible for coordination and supervision of all bridge maintenance operations in a designated area. Performs technical and paraprofessional engineering duties associated with bridge maintenance and construction.

Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience and/or each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.

Minimum Qualifications

Education/

Experience:

Equivalent combination of 4 years of education and experience after completion of high school. Education and experience must be in general bridge construction, bridge maintenance, or related field, with at least two years in a position that involved supervising groups in bridge construction and maintenance.

License/Certification:
Must possess a valid Commercial Driver’s License A or B (CDL-A or CDL-B) with tank endorsement and air brakes.

Other Requirements:

  • Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must meet the minimum standards as established by the hiring agency.
  • Must receive a negative result on a pre-employment urinalysis drug screen in accordance with the Code of Federal Regulations and US DOT requirements.
  • Must have ability to climb and work from scaffolds high above the ground or water.
  • Must be willing to work throughout the State and during emergencies for long hours, 7 days a week.
Trainee Option

Candidates with an equivalent combination of 3+ years of relevant education and experience after completion of high school may be considered and hired in 'trainee status' for this position.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of modern methods used in bridge construction and bridge maintenance. Skill in use of bridge construction tools and equipment. Ability to place, layout and supervise workers engaged in bridge work. Ability to work outdoors for long periods under varying climatic conditions. Ability to climb and work from scaffolds high above ground. Ability to establish and maintain harmonious relationships with the motoring public as well as landowners along the highway right-of-way and employees.

Demonstrated agility, mechanical ability, resourcefulness, initiative and sound judgment. Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency appointing authority.

After-Hire Requirements
  • Candidates possessing a valid Operators or CDL-B license must obtain the CDL-A license within 1 year of hire.
  • Offers of employment are conditional upon the individual obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License medical card unless the candidate is currently employed by the State of New Hampshire.

Responsibilities
  • Supervises, trains, and evaluates all bridge construction trades including plan and specification comprehension, layout of project lines and grades, carpentry, welding, concrete placement and forming systems, structural steel erection, structural steel painting, specialized material fabrication, cofferdam construction, emergency temporary bridge erection, and structural steel straightening.
  • Plans, prioritizes, and directs short and long-range construction and repair schedules, including preventive maintenance, within a designated area, and makes recommendations for resolving bridge-related problems.
  • Supervises and trains subordinates in project safety and personal protection per federal and state regulations, including complex work zone traffic control procedures.
  • Implements and performs safety and security inspections for heightened monitoring and safety of the State’s infrastructure.
  • Maintains an emergency-ready staff capable of responding to critical unanticipated structural needs.
  • Controls the use, storage, and documentation of hazardous materials and disposal of hazardous waste generated by operations.
  • Documents and maintains accurate records of all work schedules, health and safety requirements, and project costs (labor, materials, equipment).
  • Coordinates construction and maintenance operations in wetland areas to comply with permits and applicable laws and regulations.
  • Inspects various types of bridges and other structures for damage and establishes priorities for repair of emergencies or hazardous conditions.
  • Measures and calculates weights, volumes, and quantities of construction materials; schedules on-time deliveries; supervises material incorporation; uses a computerized inventory system and Maintenance Management System.
  • Communicates with state personnel, the public, and private contractors; establishes contract rental agreements for construction equipment.
