The High School Counselor provides a comprehensive, data-informed school counseling program that supports students’ academic achievement, college and career readiness, and social-emotional development. The counselor works collaboratively with students, families, staff, and community partners to remove barriers to learning and ensure equitable access to opportunities that promote postsecondary success.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Academic Development- Guide students in course selection and academic planning aligned with graduation requirements and postsecondary goals.
- Monitor student progress toward diploma completion and state requirements.
- Analyze academic data to identify trends and provide targeted interventions.
- Support transitions from middle school to high school and high school to postsecondary pathways.
- Assist students with career exploration, pathway selection, and development of individualized graduation plans.
- Provide information and support regarding college applications, financial aid (including FAFSA), scholarships, and workforce entry.
- Coordinate college visits, career fairs, and postsecondary planning events.
- Collaborate with work-based learning, internship, and dual-credit programs to expand student opportunities.
- Provide short-term individual and small-group counseling focused on social-emotional skills, resilience, and conflict resolution.
- Implement proactive programming related to mental wellness, coping strategies, and healthy decision‑making.
- Support crisis intervention efforts and coordinate referrals to community mental health resources when appropriate.
- Promote a safe, inclusive, and supportive school climate.
- Partner with teachers, administrators, and support staff to identify and address student needs.
- Communicate effectively with families regarding student progress, academic concerns, and postsecondary planning.
- Serve on school improvement, MTSS, and student support teams.
- Advocate for equitable access to rigorous coursework and enrichment opportunities.
- Maintain accurate, confidential student records in accordance with FERPA and district policies.
- Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations related to counseling services.
- Utilize student information systems and data platforms to track progress and program effectiveness.
- Master’s degree in School Counseling or related field preferred.
- Valid state School Counselor license or certification required.
- Knowledge of adolescent development and counseling theory.
- Understanding of graduation pathways, postsecondary admissions processes, and financial aid systems.
- Ability to analyze student performance data and implement interventions.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
- Demonstrated cultural competence and commitment to equity.
- Ability to sit and stand for extended periods.
- Ability to communicate effectively in person and electronically.
- Occasional evening or weekend responsibilities for family events or student programs.
