Posting Summary

Research Assistant to synthesize, purify and characterize specialty ionic liquids. The successful candidate will hold at least an Associate's Degree and be a continuing student majoring in Chemistry or Biology.

Job Duties:

  • Synthesis of functionalized imidazolium, pyrrolidinium and other types of specialty ionic liquids bearing sulfonylimide and other anions.
  • Purification of ionic liquids using standard organic procedures.
  • Structure confirmation of ionic liquids using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy.
  • Water content determination of ionic liquids using Karl Fischer Titration.
  • Measurement of temperature dependent viscosity and conductivity of ionic liquids.
  • Measurement of density.
  • Measurement of thermal profiles using Differential Scanning Calorimetry.
  • Maintaining a laboratory notebook with records of all procedures, observations and results.
  • Compiling data and delivering oral and poster presentations at local and national scientific meetings.
  • Write up of all experimental procedures, results and analyses for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Hiring for multiple positions.

    Qualifications

    Experience required in the synthesis and characterization of ionic liquids based on imidazolium and pyrrolidinium cations paired with fluorosulfonylimide anions of various types. The synthesized and purified ionic liquids will be characterized for physical properties including conductivity and viscosity. Purification will include recrystallization and decolorization with activated charcoal.

    Under Policy 100.3.1 Immunization Policy for Covered Individuals, if employment will commence during Flu Season, Rutgers University may require certain prospective employees to provide proof that they are vaccinated against Seasonal Influenza for the current Flu Season, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption.
