Active, valid NJ Registered Nurse license required
BSN required
OCN certification required within one year
One Year Of Oncology Experience Required
Two years of oncology experience preferred
Responsibilities- The Helping Role:
- Creates a climate for healing by planning and providing for the provision of traditional and individualized comfort measures.
- Fosters an environment to include the CORE mission and conceptual model.
- Serves as an advocate to patients and families by providing information and opportunities to participate in goal setting.
- Teaching / Coaching Functions:
- Serves as a teacher or coach by identifying patient readiness to learn, formulating and implementing individual teaching plans, and documenting outcomes.
- Interprets conditions and offers rationales, which satisfy patient and family needs.
- Plans for and documents the needs of the patient.
- Effective Management of Rapidly Changing Situations:
- Performs effectively in life threatening emergencies by identifying emergency situations, initiating appropriate interventions, and documenting outcomes.
- Demonstrates the ability to reset priorities according to the demands of the clinical situation.
- Diagnostic & Monitoring Function:
- Accurately detects and documents significant changes in a patient's physiological, psychological, cultural and spiritual condition and needs for nursing care based upon a detailed assessment reflective of each patient’s status.
- Demonstrates the ability to interpret and diagnose changes in patient’s condition, plan appropriate interventions to achieve expected outcomes, document changes, interventions and outcomes, with regard to the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on their assigned unit (infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric).
- Anticipate problems that might arise in frequently occurring clinical situations.
- Collaborates well with physicians and other health‑care team members to determine appropriate interventions.
- Administering & Monitoring Therapeutic Interventions & Regimens:
- Perform, adapt and safely demonstrate procedures required by patients according to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital policies and procedures.
- Administers medications accurately and safely.
- Documents according to the Nursing Process and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Standards of Care.
- Performs, demonstrates and documents technical skills specific to the nursing unit.
- Monitoring & ensuring the Quality of Health Care Practices:
- Ensuring the delivery of safe and quality patient care by facilitating appropriate responses from other health‑care team members participating in quality monitoring activities.
- Obtains new physician prescriptions to more appropriately reflect care regimens.
- Collaborates with members of the health‑care team.
- Attends unit‑based performance improvement analysis meetings, identifying important aspects of care, and contributing to the maintenance and improvement of care.
- Organizational & Work Role
Competencies:- Demonstrates the ability to organise your shift assignment by meeting patient care needs, providing assistance to other team members and responding to the changing needs of the unit.
- Contributes to a therapeutic environment by demonstrating willingness and capability to assume charge and preceptor responsibilities whenever necessary.

- Mandatory Training:
Continuing education 30 hours bi‑annually
- Valid NJ Registered Nurse license.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
- Oncology Nursing Certification (OCN) within one year of hire.
- One year of oncology experience (preferred: two years).
- Current cancer‑specific certification or completion of 36 oncology‑related continuing education contact hours per accreditation cycle.
