Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care (UBHC), established in 1971, offers a full continuum of evidence-based behavioral health and addiction services for children, adolescents, adults, and seniors throughout New Jersey. UBHC has a large team of experienced behavioral health professionals and support staff dedicated to treatment, prevention, and education, with sites across the state. Services include inpatient, outpatient, partial hospitalization, crisis stabilization, family/caregiver support, community outreach and case management, supportive housing, employment services, prevention and consultation, employee assistance programs, and a licensed therapeutic school from preschool through high school.
UBHC also leads state training resources for multiple state departments, delivering trainings annually.

Posting Summary: The Mental Health Specialist III serves as a team member in providing and maintaining a safe therapeutic milieu. This role provides support and assists staff nurses as directed, transports clients to and from treatment and related activities, and actively participates in group activity and crisis intervention. Key duties include transportation and direct care for consumers/patients, engaging them in appropriate treatment interventions, therapeutic interactions, and assisting with admission, transfer, and discharge procedures.
Responsibilities- Provide transportation and direct care responsibilities for consumers/patients as assigned.
- Engage consumers/patients in appropriate treatment interventions based on service plans and supervisory directions.
- Interact and communicate with consumers/patients in a therapeutic manner.
- Assist with admission, transfer, and discharge procedures for consumers.
Minimum Education and Experience: Associate's Degree with two (2) years of experience in behavioral health services, or Bachelor's Degree in Social Work, Psychology, or a related field; or a high school diploma with five (5) years of experience in behavioral health services.
Certifications/Licenses: Valid driver’s license. If holding a degree in Social Work, active NJ certification/licensure as required by the State Board of Social Work.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Must be able to pass pre-employment and random drug/alcohol tests.

Physical Demands and Work Environment- PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Must be able to lift up to 70 pounds multiple times a day; bending, lifting, sitting; some travel to client homes and community agencies. - WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Moderate noise; subject to unpredictable situations, patient crises, and exposure to blood borne pathogens requiring PPE.
