Job Summary

Rutgers is seeking a Special Education Content Specialist for the Effective School Practice Center. This role is ideal for a special education teacher or specialist who is passionate about improving access to clear, high‑quality information and resources for families of children with disabilities and increasing meaningful family engagement in special education processes.

Responsibilities
  • Works closely with project staff, family partners, and community stakeholders to identify, review, organize, and adapt materials that support families and caregivers, including those navigating special education services, early intervention, and related supports.
  • Finds and reviews resources (guides, handouts, videos, websites) related to disability, special education, family support, and SEPAG (Special Education Parent Advisory Groups).
  • Re‑writes or adapts materials into clear, family‑friendly language.
  • Supports SEPAG groups and districts by sharing relevant resources, answering questions, and helping identify tools that strengthen family engagement and collaboration.
  • Gives feedback on how resources are presented online so that families can find and use them easily.
  • Incorporates best practices in family engagement, including strategies for reaching diverse families, families whose home language is not English, and families who may be unfamiliar with special education systems.
Qualifications
  • Minimum

    Education and Experience:

    Bachelor’s degree in Special Education, Education, Social Work, Child Development, or a related field plus 2–3 years of experience working with families with disabilities and/or in PK–12 special education settings; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience working directly with families of children with disabilities (e.g., IEP meetings, family outreach, trainings, or support).
  • Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Strong understanding of PK–12 special education processes (referral, evaluation, eligibility, IEP development, 504 plans, progress monitoring).
  • Familiarity with SEPAG (purpose, basic requirements, and strategies for effective family–school collaboration).
  • Familiarity with IDEA, Section 504, and NJ special education regulations.
  • Strong writing skills and comfort translating complex information into plain, family‑friendly language.
  • Knowledge of inclusive education practices and how they impact students with disabilities and their families.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Current or prior NJ Teacher of Students with Disabilities (TOSD) or equivalent special education certification.
  • Background in family engagement, parent training, or community outreach.
  • Experience curating, reviewing, or creating educational resources (toolkits, guides, videos, handouts, etc.).
  • Proficiency with office productivity software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, One Drive, Acrobat, Outlook, Teams) and event/TA delivery systems (Quickbase, Wix Events, Zoom).
Salary and Benefits

Hourly rate: $30–$40. Salary offer may be adjusted based on qualifications, experience, and available funding.
