Salary DetailsThe academic year salary will not be less than $75,152, based on the most recent collective bargaining agreement between the faculty union (AAUP-AFT) and Rutgers University.

The School of Arts and Sciences, Department of Sociology – Program in Criminal Justice seeks a full‑time, non‑tenure track instructor to teach undergraduate courses in the Criminal Justice Program for the 2026‑2027 academic year.
Courses may be introductory surveys or upper‑level courses focused on specific themes or topics consistent with the criminal justice curriculum and faculty expertise. Candidates who can teach courses on correctional systems, penology, prisons, and/or prisoners, are especially encouraged to apply.
As the instructor of record, the individual is responsible for preparing the course syllabus, delivering lectures, and leading discussions, assessing student work in a timely manner, holding weekly office hours, responding to student emails, and submitting final course grades to the registrar. We are only accepting applications from those willing to teach in‑person.
The teaching load is 3-3 (six courses total for AY 2026‑2027). This is a 1‑year, nonrenewable position.

Minimum Education and ExperienceCandidates should have a PhD or ABD in Criminology, Criminal Justice, or a related field. Prior undergraduate teaching experience required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesExcellent communication and interpersonal skills are a prerequisite. Prior teaching experience and evidence of teaching effectiveness is required. Responsiveness to institutional and instructional deadlines and ability to teach a variety of existing criminal justice course offerings highly desired.
Immunization RequirementsUnder Policy 100.3.1 Immunization Policy for Covered Individuals, if employment will commence during Flu Season, Rutgers University may require certain prospective employees to provide proof that they are vaccinated against seasonal influenza for the current Flu Season, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption. Additional infection control and safety policies may apply. Prospective employees should speak with their hiring manager to determine which policies apply to the role or position for which they are applying.
