Posting Summary

The Rutgers New Brunswick Department of Animal Sciences invites qualified candidates to apply for a 12‑month tenured open‑rank faculty position in the Extension Specialist title series. This position builds on the Rutgers Equine Science Center’s strengths by focusing on equine physiology and using the horse as a model for understanding the human‑animal bond.

The successful candidate will: design statewide workshops on physiology, nutrition, welfare, and pasture systems; create decision‑support tools; translate research findings into practical applications for horse owners and industry professionals; and support data‑driven policy development with state agencies and industry groups.

Responsibilities also include developing an externally funded research program, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in equine physiology, health, behavior, and management, supervising student‑led projects, and integrating experiential learning opportunities such as field visits and community‑based projects into the curriculum.

Qualifications
  • Doctorate in animal or equine science, or a related biological discipline.
  • Minimum of six years of extension experience with a record of publications, grants, or extension programming demonstrating potential for success.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Knowledge of cooperative extension principles, mission, and roles is desirable.
  • Research interests in behavior and welfare, horse and human interaction, nutrition, pasture and forage management, or other areas of equine physiology.
  • Ability to function effectively in classroom, field, and laboratory environments.

Salary Details

Assistant rank: $108,000;
Associate rank: $145,000;
Extension Specialist (equivalent to Professor I) rank: $165,000. Final salary offer may be adjusted based on qualifications, experience, and available funding.
