Sr. Manager of Engineering Compensation: $150,000

Location: New Britain, CT

Overview

The Sr. Manager of Engineering will oversee and manage all aspects of the engineering and maintenance functions within a food manufacturing plant. This leader will direct a team of engineers and maintenance managers/supervisors to ensure smooth operations, maximize productivity, and maintain facility infrastructure and equipment. The role includes developing and executing plans to support current and future plant requirements, implementing best practices in maintenance, and driving continuous improvement.

Responsibilities
  • Manage engineering and maintenance functions, providing leadership, direction, and professional development for direct reports.

  • Develop and oversee predictive/preventive maintenance programs to reduce downtime, extend asset lifespan, and control costs.

  • Direct preventative maintenance for facility infrastructure, utilities, electrical distribution, process instrumentation, and production equipment.

  • Collaborate with senior management on capital improvement projects; recommend and oversee expense/capital initiatives to improve productivity, safety, and efficiency.

  • Lead the design, planning, and execution of capital and expense projects, ensuring adherence to budgets and timelines.

  • Partner with cross-functional teams to resolve escalated issues, implement new procedures, and introduce new equipment, layouts, or product lines.

  • Conduct replacement analysis of equipment, considering costs, depreciation, service life, and maintenance needs.

  • Ensure effective communication and timely process/equipment/product change updates for all stakeholders.

  • Source, evaluate, and negotiate with vendors, contractors, and suppliers for cost-effective, high-quality services and materials.

  • Develop and track key maintenance KPIs to drive reliability and continuous improvement.

  • Identify and implement new technologies and methodologies to enhance plant performance.

  • Conduct safety inspections, risk assessments, and training programs; ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations.

  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance, engineering plans, and compliance documentation.

  • Prepare and manage departmental budgets and resource allocation.

  • Manage team performance, including recruitment, scheduling, evaluation, performance management, and career development.

  • Ensure adherence to GMP, regulatory, food safety, quality, sanitation, and environmental policies.

Requirements
  • Undergraduate degree in engineering or related field, or equivalent technical training/experience in mechanical or electrical disciplines.

  • 8+ years of engineering or maintenance experience in a food manufacturing environment, including 1+ year of management experience.

  • Experience in environmental compliance, PLC programming, and capital project/budget management.

  • Certifications and/or licenses may be required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Strong leadership skills; ability to motivate and develop diverse teams.

  • In-depth knowledge of food manufacturing processes, equipment, and regulatory/safety requirements.

  • Expertise in architectural, mechanical, electrical, and process production engineering.

  • Proficiency in continuous improvement (CI) tools and methodologies.

  • Strong organizational, planning, and execution skills with attention to detail.

  • Excellent problem-solving, decision-making, and analytical abilities.

  • Ability to scope, schedule, budget, and lead capital projects.

  • Strong communication skills—verbal and written—for diverse stakeholders.

  • Effective collaboration and conflict resolution skills.

  • Adaptable and capable of managing change.

  • Proficiency in English (reading, writing, speaking)
