Position Summary
The LPN Respiratory Nurse provides respiratory care to residents through assessment, intervention, and education within the scope of practical nursing license. The LPN Respiratory nurse adheres to the standards of care to maintain resident safety and to attain the ultimate goal of achieving and maintaining the highest practicable physical, mental, and psychosocial well‑being of each resident.
Essential Responsibilities And Duties- Systematically collect data regarding residents through interview of resident and family, observation, discussion with physicians and review of medical records.
- Assess residents, apply knowledge to facilitate the best therapeutic plan of care, making recommendations as needed.
- Assist and be knowledgeable in the development and revision of care plans using the RAI process in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
- Monitor any change in resident condition and revise the plan of care to reflect current resident status.
- Assist and complete assessments as delegated.
- Have knowledge of and consistently follow standards of documentation and written communication.
- Review respiratory orders and provide recommendations as needed.
- Be knowledgeable in the procedures to facilitate physician orders and complete procedures including, but not limited to, administering oxygen, humidity, and respiratory medications.
- Perform suctioning of various methods (tracheal, oropharyngeal, nasotracheal).
- Perform tracheostomy care and evaluate tracheostomy stoma for skin breakdown, infection, or wounds.
- Perform tracheostomy tube changes including routine, downsizing, and emergent.
- Provide reports to direct reports verbally.
- Accompany tracheostomy residents to appointments as needed.
- Administer and evaluate non‑invasive ventilation (Bi‑PAP or Trilogy) or CPAP and make recommendations based on response and compliance.
- Order, set up, stock, and arrange return of respiratory equipment needed for resident care.
- Provide education regarding tracheostomy care.
- Assist with N95 fit‑testing requirements of staff.
- Attend care conferences for residents with respiratory needs as able.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Display and promote a strong culture of customer service, ensuring a resident‑centered experience.
- Practice nursing activities in accordance with Minnesota BON standards while respecting residents’ dignity, privacy, and autonomous decision‑making whenever possible.
- Provide highest quality care to all residents, without regard to race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age, or culture.
- Recognize limits of knowledge, skill, and experience; facilitate situations beyond the nurse’s competency.
- Confront, correct, and explain unprofessional behavior to direct reports and complete appropriate documentation.
- Participate in nursing on‑call rotation: while on call, triage calls, gather information, and communicate with care team; do not provide clinical direction to RNs or other providers; if outside LPN scope, escalated to RN or other licensed provider.
- Maintain current Rehabilitation Center license.
- Attend continuing education, in‑service training, and e‑learning pertinent to department and as designated by Supervisor or Housing Director.
- Attend meetings as directed—including department director meetings, Quality Assurance meetings, etc.
- Promote a highly positive workplace centered on strong customer service, inclusivity, and staff support.
- Attend all staff education on safety, infection control, and disease processes.
- Attend educational programs on Continuous Quality Improvement, customer satisfaction, and other designated programs; participate in inspections and audits.
- Maintain current knowledge of Minnesota Department of Health regulations.
- Identify opportunities for improvement through completion and documentation of delegated audits and surveys; communicate to Interdisciplinary Team.
Education and Experience
- Current LPN licensure in the State of Minnesota.
- Successfully completed health care provider training in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Care.
