Position: Water Field Technician I (10514)

Field Operations Technician - Water Department Responsibilities

  • Performs unskilled to semi-skilled work for the County Water Department installing, maintaining, and repairing water and fixtures.
  • Unearths, repairs and replaces water lines, mains and connection fixtures.
  • Installs water taps; installs and repairs fire hydrants, water meters, and water valves.
  • Fills in and resurfaces roads, driveways and yards; rakes and edges yards and roads at repair sites.
  • Drives service truck to work sites.
  • Responds to maintenance and repair needs after hours and on weekends, as necessary.
  • Performs other related work as required.
  • May be required to serve during times of disaster.
Qualifications
  • Graduation from high school and some experience in the maintenance field; or any combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Working knowledge of the standard methods, materials and equipment employed in public works construction and maintenance operations.
  • Some knowledge of the occupational hazards and the safety precautions necessary for the proper operation of varied public works construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to operate trucks and motorized equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time under arduous conditions as required by work assignments.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
Physical Requirements
  • Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and water/wastewater treatment plant equipment including computers, calculators, pumps, hand tools, etc.
  • Must be able to maneuver large pipes, valve equipment and other materials associated with water distribution equipment.
  • Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
