Overview
Primary purpose of this position is to oversee the daily operations of Craven Pamlico Animal Services Center (CPASC) under general supervision. Primary responsibilities include direct supervision of the Shelter Attendant positions, coordination of rescue program, foster program, community outreach events and program, and volunteer program.
Essential FunctionsDaily Shelter Operations
- Direct supervision of the Animal Shelter Attendants. Including but not limited to scheduling, completion of performance evaluations, approval of time and leave requests, and addressing any personnel issues.
- Oversee and assist shelter attendants to ensure required tasks are being performed properly.
- Ensure medications are given to animals in the shelter as prescribed and medical logs are properly updated.
- Ensure animals in each kennel are properly identified and verify animal information and locations are accurate in the PetPoint system.
- Routinely observe animal appearance and activity in order to best ensure a high quality of care is upheld.
- Be aware of and report any signs of illness, disease, injury and/or the need of behavior modification medications to veterinarian for evaluation.
- Recognize, record, and report any unusual condition or abnormal behavior of any shelter animal.
- Perform behavioral evaluations of shelter animals as necessary.
- Ensure hold and/or quarantine requirements are met for intake animals prior to adoption, rescue transfer, etc.
- Address and answer public questions/concerns/complaints regarding shelter animals and/or daily operations.
- Complete daily rounds and random spot inspections as needed to ensure completeness and quality of work.
- Maintain healthy, safe, sanitary, and pleasant working conditions for employees, citizens, volunteers, and animals in the shelter.
- Coordinate with Veterinarian to maintain surgery schedule. Ensure animals being adopted are scheduled for spay/neuter in a timely manner.
- Assist vet with medical procedures as needed and/or schedule a Shelter Attendant to assist.
- Vaccinate and/or euthanize animals as needed based on direction from the veterinarian.
- Ensure donations are unpacked, labeled, and stocked/distributed appropriately.
- Ensure cleanliness of surgery room, animal play and visiting areas, kitchen/laundry area, and supply areas.
- Ensure cleaning procedures remain up to date in accordance with laws and industry standards. Make recommendations to Animal Services Director regarding any necessary changes.
- Maintain equipment used to complete job assignments and keep such equipment and tools in good working condition. Make recommendations to Animal Services Director when new or replacement equipment and/or tools are needed.
Program Coordination
- Coordinate with local and non-local rescue groups to secure rescue placement for any animal in our care, to include but not limited to emailing, texting, phone calls, messaging or other forms of communication.
- Coordinate transportation for shelter animals going to rescue groups as needed.
- Oversee planning, scheduling and coordination of special events hosted or attended by CPASC.
- Oversee volunteers when attending offsite events and ensure proper protocols are followed.
- Ensure that current fosters are provided with high quality support, training and supplies.
- Assist Shelter Administrative Supervisor with coordination of community service workers.
Administrative
- Serve as back up for Shelter Administrative Supervisor.
- Schedule and lead team meetings daily or as needed.
- Schedule regular team trainings for continuing education opportunities on topics involving animal health, well-being, veterinary care, or other related topics.
- Assist Animal Services Director and Shelter Administrative Supervisor with monitoring inventory and placing orders as needed.
- Assist Animal Services Director in completion of required licensures and inspections.
- Makes recommendations to the Animal Services Director regarding budget planning and personnel.
- Review employment applications, conduct interviews, and follow-up with recommendations for potential new hires.
- Continue ongoing updates for policies and procedures that are conducive with maintaining high live release rates.
- Ensure that animal locations, vaccinations and other notes are recorded properly in the shelter management software.
- Assist with answering messages from citizens via social media, email and phone calls.
- Assist with monitoring CPASC social media accounts, to include posting stray animals, posting animals that are available for adoption, and/or alerting the community of other happenings.
Additional Support
- In the event of a disaster, may be required to assist as needed.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor and/or management.
High School Diploma or equivalent and two years animal shelter, office administration, or supervisory/management experience or equivalent college-level course work.
Animal Care And Shelter Operations Experience Highly Preferred.
