Position: Animal Shelter Attendant (Part-time) 10866

Animal Shelter Attendant (Part‑time) – Craven County Government – Job

Responsibilities
  • Care for all animals at the shelter, including cleaning animal areas and common areas.
  • Perform euthanasia of animals when necessary, after certification.
  • Carry out general office duties: answer citizen inquiries about adoptable animals, discuss with owners/reclaimers the requirement of wearing rabies tags, verify offenses, take requests for services, prepare bank deposits and deliver them to the bank.
  • Log animals, obtain signed release forms for unwanted animals, complete all rabies vaccination forms, adoption/reclaim documents, and contracts.
  • Assist public and Animal Control Officers with handling animals brought into the shelter.
  • Educate the public on laws pertaining to required rabies vaccination of dogs and cats and the need for vaccinated animals to wear rabies tags.
  • Assist with inventory of supplies and other activities associated with the conduct of the animal shelter as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor/management.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

This position requires a thorough knowledge of public health related to rabies control, legal and enforcement policies, and procedures. Ability to read, interpret, and explain rules, regulations, and procedures. Strong communication skills with the general public and employees. Compassion and kindness toward animals are essential.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift and carry loaded animal traps from truck to shelter. Must be able to handle and control animals to prevent injury to self and others.

Qualifications

High School diploma or GED and one year of experience caring for animals, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Valid driver’s license.
