Overview

Primary

Purpose:

Performs a variety of grounds work, heavy duty housekeeping and limited general maintenance duties.

Essential Functions

Follows daily duty assignments and schedules of the housekeeping and grounds division.

Mows lawns; trims and edges around walkways, flower beds and fences.

Operates and maintains lawn mowers and some power and hand tools.

Keeps the parking lot and sidewalks free of debris and miscellaneous trash.

Assists in the cleaning of buildings; vacuums, mops, sweeps, dusts, cleans restrooms and restroom fixtures, cleans windows and spot cleans carpet.

Performs various limited carpentry repairs.

Additional Duties

Assists in locking and unlocking facilities as scheduled.

Performs related work as required.

May be required to serve during times of disaster.

Minimum Education and Experience

High School Diploma or equivalent and at least two years' experience in custodial and/or building and grounds maintenance. Some knowledge of the hazards and applicable safety requirements associated with grounds keeping and custodial maintenance.

Must have a valid North Carolina driver's license.

Pesticide license is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

General knowledge of the standard practices, materials and equipment related to grounds maintenance and landscaping.

Considerable knowledge of cleaning procedures, products and expected results.

Considerable knowledge of the operation of tractors and mowers.

Considerable knowledge of the safe and proper use and maintenance of various hand and power tools used in building and grounds maintenance work.

Ability to use motorized machinery, power and hand tools, and cleaning supplies effectively.

Ability to maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability performs physical labor for extended periods of time, possibly under arduous conditions.

Must possess basic personal computer skills to use the electronic work order system to track and maintain work requests.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to perform basic life functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, grasping, pushing, pulling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.

Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Must have visual acuity to operate tractors, mowers and various hand and power tools.

Craven County provides eligible employees with $50.00 per week in disability insurance through One America AUL. Employees have the option to purchase additional disability insurance at their own cost.

North Carolina Local Governmental Employees' Retirement System
Eligible employees are automatically enrolled in the retirement system and must contribute 6% of their gross salary each pay period. Once eligibility requirements are met, employees will be able to receive monthly payments for life based on their salary, age, and years of service credit.
