The School Resource Officer (SRO) will be responsible for diverting minor law infractions through school disciplinary measures and parent counseling, rather than involving the criminal court system. The SRO will develop classroom presentations on topics such as substance abuse, youth violence, motor vehicle laws, safe driving, and juvenile law. They will be available to faculty to address students in classrooms upon request.
The ideal candidate should be able to build trusting relationships with students through support, counseling, and confidence.
The responsibilities include:
Protecting the lives and property of Craven County citizens.Enforcing federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, and assisting school officials with policies and regulations.Investigating criminal activity on school property or involving students, and managing court procedures as necessary.Collaborating with Juvenile Court Counselors.Assisting school administration with disciplinary duties as needed, though not serving as a primary disciplinarian.Counseling students in special situations and initiating conflict resolution.Providing information about Juvenile Law and North Carolina laws to students.Scheduling and delivering law enforcement curriculum in classrooms.Assisting other law enforcement agencies with investigations involving students.Reporting potential dangerous incidents on school property immediately to a supervisor.Maintaining communication with school administration and supervisors via radio.Providing security at school events and coordinating additional officers when necessary.Qualifications include:
- High school graduation.
- Completion of Basic Law Enforcement Training Certificate.
- Valid North Carolina Driver’s License.
- Two years of law enforcement experience recommended, with knowledge of patrol and law enforcement techniques.
The SRO, as a deputy sheriff, may be called upon to perform other duties or attend training outside of school assignments, as directed by the Sheriff, Chief Deputy, or Administrative Captain.
