Responsible for performing skilled electrical inspection work requiring independent judgment and discretion to ensure compliance with city, state and federal governmental regulations for existing and new installations.
Examples of Essential Duties- Checks plans and workmanship to see that electrical work complies with ordinances and regulations.
- Keeps accurate daily records of inspections and permit applications.
- Performs inspections of new wiring and electrical installations in residence, business, public and other buildings.
- Assist other inspectors with performing inspections of new building construction in residential, business, public, and other buildings as necessary.
- Inspects electrical signs and large lighting fixtures.
- Notifies power company of services approved for connecting.
- Explains wiring codes and related subjects to contractors and electricians.
- Inspects installation of electrical appliances for possible overloading of circuits.
- Investigates building fires to determine whether fire could have been caused by defective wiring.
- Inspects buildings and structures that sell alcoholic beverages on an annual basis.
- Assists with scanning and maintaining property/permit data in a records management system.
- Assists in scheduling inspections.
- Performs “after-hours” inspections and/or building assessments as required by DCD Director, Deputy Director, DCD-EM, PD and/or Fire following emergency incidents.
- Performs other work as assigned.
Skills And Abilities
- Knowledge of methods and practices involved in constructing, installing and operating a variety of electrical installations, equipment and appliances.
- Knowledge of standard testing devices.
- Knowledge of possible defects and faults in electrical wiring and appliances and of effective corrective measures.
- Knowledge of municipal ordinances relating to electrical appliances and installations and effective corrective measures.
- Ability to detect and locate defective electrical wiring and construction.
- Ability to determine proper remedial measures.
- Ability to understand and work from construction and wiring blueprints, drawings and diagrams.
- Ability to contact owners, contractors, craftsmen, appliance dealers and others.
- Ability to effect and maintain satisfactory working relationships in the enforcement of regulations.
- Post high school technical and/or vocational training in electrical construction methods.
- Wisconsin Master Electrician license and State of Wisconsin Inspection Certifications as a commercial and residential electrical inspector, and residential building inspector.
- Minimum three (3) years of experience as an electrician.
- Valid Wisconsin Driver’s License.
- Commercial Building Certification.
- Tasks involve extended period of sedentary work.
- Times where exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
- Task involves extended period of time at a keyboard.
- None. This position is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
- The task requires close visual acuity to perform various activities.
- The task requires oral communications ability.
- The task requires sound perception.
