The Opportunity

WHV is revitalizing its philanthropic program and seeking an energetic, relationship‑driven, entrepreneurial Director of Development who is ready to lead the department from day one. This is a hands‑on builder role. You will architect strategy, execute directly, and own outcomes, with runway to grow the function as engagement and revenue scale.

You’ll partner closely with the President & CEO and collaborate with our Senior Rabbi / Director of Spiritual Care to weave mission, values, and community relationships into a compelling development agenda.

Responsibilities
  • Rebuild and Lead WHV’s Fundraising Program
    • Develop a multi‑year fundraising strategy aligned with WHV’s mission, values, and strategic priorities.
    • Stand up core development functions: annual giving, major‑gifts pipeline & moves management, stewardship, donor communications, gift processing/acknowledgment, and reporting.
  • Major Gifts & Community Relationships
    • Build and manage a personal portfolio of prospects and donors, with a focus on individuals and families in the Columbus Jewish community and aligned networks.
    • Create authentic, trust‑based connections through 1:1 visits, parlor meetings, campus tours, volunteer engagement, and personalized stewardship.
  • Grants & Institutional Giving
    • Research, write, and manage grants (program, capital, capacity); ensure strong funder relationships and timely reporting.
  • Values‑Centered Engagement & Storytelling
    • Partner with the Senior Rabbi / Director of Spiritual Care to infuse Jewish values and meaningful narratives into donor experiences and communications.
    • Collaborate with Marketing/Communications to craft a consistent case for support, impact stories, and segmented appeals.
  • Systems, Data, and Accountability
    • Implement/optimize a CRM; establish pipeline, activity, and revenue dashboards.
    • Provide progress updates and insights to the President & CEO and to Board leaders.
  • Qualifications

    What You’ll Bring

    Experience
    • 3–7 years of progressive experience in fundraising or relationship‑based engagement (Jewish communal work, healthcare philanthropy, higher‑ed, or human services).
    • Evidence of closing gifts and stewarding donors.
    • Comfort operating as a department head and hands‑on practitioner at launch.
    Skills & Attributes
    • Personable, warm, and credible with donors; an excellent listener and natural connector.
    • Entrepreneurial builder with strong follow‑through; organized, disciplined, and data‑aware.
    • Strong written and verbal communication; compelling storyteller and case‑maker.
    • Cultural literacy and respect for Jewish values and Jewish communal life; experience in Jewish community contexts is a plus (not required).
    • CRM proficiency and basic analytics fluency.
    What Success Looks Like (First 12–18 Months)
    • Re‑engaged constituency: Reconnect lapsed and legacy donors; sustain a cadence of 1:1 visits and small‑group engagements.
    • Visible pipeline growth: A qualified portfolio with clear next actions and movement toward leadership‑gift asks.
    • Annual giving lift: Baseline revenue stabilized and trending up via segmentation and improved stewardship.
    • Grant wins: Priority proposals submitted with early awards; reporting cadence established.
    • System foundation: CRM configured; stewardship calendar and gift acknowledgment SOPs running.
