Permanent driver position with beginning wage options depending on PERS contribution and training status.
FLSA STATUS: NON-EXEMPT
Position SummaryOperate school buses in accordance with Federal and State of Nevada traffic laws and regulations of the Nevada Department of Education and Lyon County School District. Work under the immediate supervision of the Area Coordinator.
Responsibilities- Operate school buses in accordance with federal and State of Nevada traffic laws and regulations of the Nevada Department of Education and Lyon County School District.
- Drive defensively following safe driving practices.
- Be responsible for the safe operation, condition, washing, and cleanliness of the bus (inside and out).
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections and report any needed maintenance.
- Establish and maintain rapport with passengers; supervise students, maintain pupil control, and report violations to proper authority.
- Keep accurate records and submit all reports on time.
- Attend driver meetings and training sessions as required (absences approved as needed).
- Transport students to special activities such as field trips and athletic events as assigned.
- Substitutes may be contacted on an "as needed" basis; minimum of two work days per month; repeated refusals may lead to termination as a driver for Lyon County School District.
- Make deliveries and provide back-up driving services for exceptional or Special Needs Students.
- Perform other tasks related to the position as assigned.
Night and weekend work schedules or on-call status may be required. Assert initiative, reliability, punctuality, honesty, and good moral conduct. Maintain personal cleanliness and refrain from inappropriate language or behavior.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Position Expectations)- Knowledge of transportation rules, regulations, and workplace safety.
- Driving techniques, vehicle maneuverability, road signs, signals, and markings.
- Nevada traffic laws per applicable manuals and district policies.
- Defensive driving principles and sound judgment for unforeseen circumstances or bad weather.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions and supervise students.
- Ability to operate a two-way radio and work flexible hours and shifts at various locations.
- Adequate hearing and vision to meet requirements; depth perception and CDL requirements.
- Physical ability to perform duties and abstain from impairing medications; meet DOT physical requirements.
- Full use of limbs and safe handling of equipment.
Education, Training, and
Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED, college, technical, trade, etc.).
- Safe driving record maintained for the duration of the assignment.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Ability to read and speak English sufficiently for communication and record-keeping.
- Nevada Class B or A Commercial Driver’s License with required endorsements to operate a school bus; maintained for duration of the assignment.
- Current 10-year driving history from DMV at time of application.
- Certification by the Nevada Department of Education after completing State Bus Driver Examination.
- Valid Department of Transportation Physical Examination Certification for school bus operation; maintained for duration.
- CPR/AED certification from a recognized organization; in-person training with hands-on component; maintained for duration.
- Bloodborne Pathogen and Universal Precaution Training; zero tolerance for safety-sensitive functions; drug testing policy as described.
Typical work areas include district facilities, schools, classrooms, gyms, offices, and buses. Physical demands include lifting, steering, driving, standing, walking, climbing stairs, and long periods of sitting; vision and hearing requirements; exposure to varying weather and noise levels. Equipment includes district vehicles, buses, computers, and multimedia equipment.
