Position: HEAT PLANT SPECIALIST 3 - LOVELOCK
Location: Lovelock

The Department of Corrections is seeking to fill a Heat Plant Specialist 3 located in Lovelock. This position will operate and perform preventative maintenance on boiler system at Lovelock Correctional Center. The incumbent must have a working knowledge of meters, gauges, and alarm systems of the heat plant; procedures used to test water, and record heat plant conditions.

Heat Plant Specialists operate, adjust, monitor, maintain, clean and repair high and/or low pressure boilers and hot water heat generating equipment, auxiliary equipment such as fuel and combustion systems, compressors, pumps, steam lines, steam traps, heat exchangers, water lines, controls, gauges, and emergency power generators.

Qualifications
  • Completion of a recognized heat plant apprenticeship program followed by one year of journey level experience as a heat plant specialist; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above; OR one year of experience as a Heat Plant Specialist II in Nevada State service.
  • Check system functions by monitoring and/or adjusting a computerized energy management system, combustion and safety controls, and pressure and temperature gauges to ensure safe and efficient operation of heat plant equipment; take water samples; analyze chemical properties of feed water; add chemicals and blow down water level controls as needed to prevent deposit and sludge buildup.
Responsibilities
  • Perform preventive maintenance by lubricating motors and fans, replacing drive belts and cleaning equipment and surrounding areas to promote safety and maximum efficiency of equipment.
  • Perform seasonal overhauls and inspection preparation of heat plant and heat distribution systems by dismantling and cleaning boilers, repairing or replacing refractories, repacking valves, repairing pumps and seals, and checking and calibrating controls according to agency policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Install, retrofit and fabricate new equipment and components utilizing electrical, welding and plumbing skills in order to update the system or replace worn parts.
  • Maintain records of system operating conditions, maintenance performed and equipment malfunctions in accordance with agency policies and procedures and regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare budget requests for maintenance and equipment replacement.
  • Respond to emergencies such as utility or system failures as required.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Under general supervision, incumbents perform all of the duties described in the series concept and either:
    1) in a correctional environment, function as a lead‑worker for inmate crews on a regular and recurring basis, document inmate performance through completion of periodic performance reports, and are responsible for implementing security procedures which include securing the work area from unauthorized inmates and accountability for assigned inmates, staff, tools, and equipment; or
    2) serve as a lead‑worker for skilled Heat Plant Specialist II’s by assigning and reviewing work and providing training and input to work performance evaluations; or
    3) supervise semi‑skilled and/or unskilled staff to include providing orientation and training, assigning, reviewing work, and conducting performance evaluations.

Skill in: the use of hand and power tools and test instruments used to maintain, troubleshoot and repair heat plant equipment.
