Location: Ely
Overview
The incumbent will work in a correctional setting at Ely State Prison and function as a lead worker for an inmate crew on a regular basis and document inmate performance through completion of periodic performance reports. Incumbents are also responsible for implementing security procedures which include securing the work area from unauthorized inmates and accountability for assigned inmates, staff, tools and equipment.
This position will maintain tool organization in the automotive and welding shop and assist with automotive repairs.
- Lead-worker for an inmate crew on a regular basis; document inmate performance through completion of periodic performance reports.
- Implement security procedures to ensure efficient, secure, and safe operation of the work unit; secure work areas from unauthorized inmates and maintain accountability for assigned inmates, staff, tools, and equipment.
- Maintain tool organization in the automotive and welding shop and assist with automotive repairs.
- Plan and lay out welding projects; join metal components using gas welding, arc welding, soldering, and brazing to fabricate, strengthen, and repair components, equipment, and fixtures.
- Work from blueprints and examine components to determine appropriate materials, quantities, and processes; complete work orders and cost estimates; order materials; design, cut, and lay out templates for proper fit.
- Lay out and fit material for welding; measure, scribe dimensions, and reference points; prepare material and position components for welding.
- Set up jobs, select welding processes, adjust equipment, and secure material for final welding.
- Weld metal components using gas and arc welding processes (AC/DC arc, TIG, MIG, and flux-core) applying knowledge of metallurgy and welding techniques.
- Manually guide equipment along weld lines, inspect welds for quality and adherence to specifications, and reassemble components after repair as needed.
- Operate machine tools (lathe, drill press, grinder, band saw, mill, iron worker, hoists, press, hand tools) to complete general repair work.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
- Under general supervision, may function as a lead-worker for lower-level Welders or inmate crews, including assigning and reviewing work and participating in performance evaluations, training, and technical guidance, while complying with security requirements.
- Completion of an approved welding apprenticeship program followed by one year of journey-level welding experience; OR one year of experience as a Welder I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Working knowledge of safe welding procedures and the proper use, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials; understanding of weldability, ductility, and effects of welding, heating, tempering, cooling, wear, and stress on materials.
- General knowledge of metallurgy and mechanical theory and design.
- Skill in welding in flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions for various welding processes; ability to design installations and modify equipment for new functions.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and hydraulic/electrical schematics; recognize various metals and alloys and establish effective working relationships with vendors and other technical information sources.
