Overview
The Department of Corrections is seeking to fill Correctional Nurse 2 positions at Ely State Prison. Incumbents will be under the supervision of the Correctional Nurse 3 and will consult with them on a regular basis. They will communicate plans with team members by attending nursing meetings and share with other team members. The Correctional Nurse 2 will use patient problems to plan patient care addressing chief presenting problems incorporating the plan of nursing care into the multidisciplinary treatment plan.
They will collect and document the medical and mental health conditions of patients using appropriate charting protocols and completing health assessments. The incumbent will collect statistical data, tracking current outpatient medications and patient outcomes. The Correctional Nurse 2 will review inmates to determine need for referrals or assessment. Incumbents will be working directly with the inmate population.
- Under general supervision of a higher-level nurse, provide professional nursing care to patients in a correctional setting in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act and Nevada Revised Statutes.
- Identify patient health care needs utilizing professional nursing assessment skills; make comprehensive clinical observations and evaluations of health needs.
- Prepare nursing care plans by assessing patient’s condition, conferring with other health care professionals, and developing nursing diagnoses and plans for treatment, services and health education.
- Coordinate health services and treatment; conduct sick calls for inmates with medical complaints; obtain orders for treatment; collaborate with staff to ensure optimum patient care.
- Administer medication as prescribed; ensure correct time, dosage and route; monitor for side effects and effectiveness; document medications administered and refused; notify appropriate personnel as needed.
- Perform physical assessments and assist in examinations and diagnostic testing; collect samples for laboratory tests as ordered.
- Maintain hygienic environments and provide emergency medical treatments such as CPR and first aid as required to stabilize patients.
- Document nurse progress notes in medical charts, review charts for changes in orders and transcribe; prepare written reports and summaries; participate in quality improvement activities and ensure regulatory standards are met.
- Carry out therapeutic procedures to provide emotional and physical comfort to patients.
- Provide patient education on health habits and answer questions regarding prescribed treatment; provide health-related education and training to staff.
- Prepare and maintain medical treatment rooms; order and stock supplies and equipment as needed.
- Maintain safety and well-being of individuals in the therapeutic environment and follow procedures regarding restraints when necessary; notify appropriate personnel of actions taken.
- Coordinate and/or participate in clinics; schedule appointments; conduct screening tests; give immunizations and maintain related records.
- Coordinate outside medical appointments for inmates; schedule appointments; arrange for transportation; inform patients of special instructions as appropriate.
- May delegate direct care duties to other personnel consistent with licensure and supervise inmates assigned to the infirmary.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- License as a Registered Nurse and two years of professional nursing experience, one of which was in a correctional or institutional setting; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
Under general supervision, incumbents perform the full range of duties described in the series concept. Positions in this class may have infection control, outpatient services and/or other specialized assignments as a primary or secondary duty. This is a professional nurse, and incumbents function at the journey level.
