STi is seeking a Machinist II to support the U.S. Air Force’s 59th Test and Evaluation Squadron (59 TES) at Nellis AFB. This role supports flight test instrumentation and aircraft modification efforts through precision fabrication, machining, repair, and calibration—producing parts, fixtures, tools, and components to exact dimensions and close tolerances in a mission-driven environment. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities include:
• Set up and operate a variety of conventional machine tools (as applicable), such as: lathes; vertical/horizontal boring mills; milling machines; shapers; planers; internal/external grinders; thread cutters; radial drills; cutting saws/power hacksaws; screw machines; drill presses; and related shop equipment.
• Plan and execute machining work using knowledge of machine shop practices/processes and adapt to technological changes affecting manufacturing procedures.
• Select appropriate raw materials using knowledge of metals, alloys, plastics, rubber, etc.; apply understanding of hardening, annealing, stress relieving, and dimensional allowances.
• Apply advanced shop mathematics (plane geometry, trigonometric functions, toolmaker formulas) to establish dimensions and lay out work.
• Select grinding wheels (grit type/size/bond/diameter) and compute correct surface speeds based on material/finish/critical factors.
• Use precision measuring instruments (as applicable): vernier calipers, height gages, squares, protractors, inside/outside/depth micrometers, surface gages, vee blocks, gage blocks (Johanssen), dial indicators, optical/electrical comparators, and other common machinist metrology tools.
• Perform planning, layout, machining, assembly, and hand finishing to precise dimensions and close tolerances.
• Devise/construct fixtures and holding devices to perform special/precise operations; set up and operate specialized precision machines as required (e.g., jig borers, jig grinders, thread grinders, EDM) to manufacture/overhaul/repair tools, dies, jigs, fixtures, molds, and gages.
• Read and interpret complex blueprints, multi-view mechanical drawings, and sketches; create sketches as needed from oral/written instructions.
• Verify accuracy of existing tools/jigs/fixtures/gages; fabricate/repair/modify and calibrate precision measuring instruments used in machine shop operations. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
U.S. Citizenship required. Clearance as noted above.
• High School Diploma (or equivalent) plus 2+ years aircraft fabrication experience
• Demonstrated ability to set up and operate conventional machine tools and perform precision work to close tolerances
• Ability to read/interpret complex blueprints and mechanical drawings
