Project Overview

The project is Thacker Pass, the largest known lithium resource in the United States. Bechtel, as EPCM contractor for Lithium Americas, is responsible for managing and integrating the efforts of a team of contractors engineering and building the facility. The project is located in the high desert of north-central Nevada, about 25 miles from the Oregon border, 1 hour northwest of Winnemucca, Nevada and 3 hours northeast of Reno.

Job Summary

The Lead Welding Superintendent is responsible for supervising and directing welding operations across the Project. This includes supervising craft professionals and subordinate supervisors, ensuring construction performance aligns with specifications, schedules, and budgets. Flexibility in schedule may be required (night, split, or day shift). Field inspections require walking on uneven surfaces, climbing ladders/scaffolding, working on elevated platforms, and the use of PPE as required.

Major Responsibilities
  • Provide ES&H leadership to personnel assigned to the Welding department, including safety procedure preparation and leading safety meetings.
  • Inspect site for unsafe conditions and take corrective action.
  • Coordinate safety training and enforce safe work practices with the Environmental Safety and Health Supervisor.
  • Champion the ZERO Accident Philosophy and ensure compliance with Bechtel and safety codes/standards.
  • Monitor craft activities for compliance with specifications and schedules.
  • Manage cost, schedule, and optimization of craft labor; maintain 90‑day and 3‑week look-ahead schedules for labor and equipment.
  • Interface with Industrial Relations for craft recruitment and training programs.
  • Review craft time records using automated tools.
  • Review and approve subcontractor equipment/personnel mobilization/demobilization.
  • Implement corporate project policies, procedures, and instructions within electrical operations.
  • Coordinate with the General Foreman to hire craft labor and execute work.
  • Coordinate established area operational plans.
  • Provide input to quantity tracking applications and report weekly installed quantities to Project Controls.
  • Prepare material requisitions for tools and consumables and coordinate through Procurement.
  • Assist in performing construction testing as required.
  • Prepare reports and forecasts, including construction progress, craft personnel forecasts, and expenditures forecasts.
  • Plan the manpower and equipment required to execute the job.
  • Perform employee reviews and identify training and development opportunities for subordinate electrical personnel.
  • Perform other duties as required by Bechtel management.
Education and Experience Requirements
  • Requires bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 10-13 years of relevant experience or 14-17 years of relevant work experience
  • PWHT Coordinator: 16-20 years of industry experience performing and implementing Post Weld Heat Treatment on large-scale projects
  • NDE Level III:
    Associates degree in engineering/science preferred plus 10 years' experience or 15 years' combined industry experience with NDE methods, writing procedures, and training
Required Knowledge and Skills
  • Heavy industrial direct hire construction experience commensurate with the type of work to be undertaken.
  • Knowledge of supervisory functions relating to field welding activities.
  • Extensive experience and practical skills in SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, and FCAW welding processes.
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Computer literacy in word processing, spreadsheets, and database applications.
  • Working knowledge of applicable industry codes and standards.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving ability.
  • Ability to develop a 3-week look-ahead schedule for crane operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and lead teams.
