NE13 $ 25.18 ($52,353) - $37.76 ($78,540)

Position Summary:

The Fire Prevention Specialist Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) is responsible for performing home and fuels reduction surveys, enforcement of residential and other building/property to ensure compliance with fire, building and other related codes and ordinances; develops and provides public fire and safety education and information programs. Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information.

Responsibilities:

  • Establish and maintain the physical fitness level necessary to effectively perform hard physical labor for extended periods under adverse climate, fuel and terrain conditions.
  • Advise and instruct owners in the removal of fuels reduction and fire hazards and make recommendations for reducing potential hazards.
  • Respond to complaints regarding fire codes and ordinances.
  • Enforce ordinances and regulations pertaining to fire safety; report violations of fire safety regulations and established safety standards to the property owner and prepare written documentation for required follow up action.
  • Prepare and participate in community-wide prevention programs by educating and instructing the public on fire safety and prevention topics.
  • Inspect all types of storage and use containers related to flammable, combustible, and hazardous materials for proper storage and labeling.
  • Conduct technical research for current commercial usage of hazardous materials.
  • Participate in fire drills and attend regular classes/trainings in fire prevention and related subjects.
  • Assist as required on emergencies and wildland fire incidents.
  • Use and properly maintain personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Represent the Washoe tribe of Nevada and California with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • 4 years fire suppression experience in a public setting and 2 years higher education; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by the Fire Management Division Chief or Department Director.
  • Pass an arduous pack test (annually)
  • Obtain State fire code inspector 1 certification or equivalent within 18 months of date of employment.
  • S-212 Wildland fire power chainsaw certification.
  • Basic first aid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • S-130 Basic Wildland Firefighter
  • S-190 Introduction to Fire Behavior
  • ICS-100 Introduction to Incident Command System
  • IS-700 Introduction to the Incident Management System
  • IS-800 National Response Framework, an Introduction

Knowledge, Abilities, Skills, and

Certifications:

  • Knowledge of the policy and procedures of the Washoe Tribe Fire Department.
  • Knowledge of geography of the area including major streets and landmarks.
  • Skilled in fuels reduction and firefighting methods, and tactics.
  • Skilled in advanced tree, brush, and vegetation identification.
  • Knowledgeable in principles and practices of fire safety and inspection techniques.
  • Ability to use correct business English, including spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Able to conduct (Wildland Urban Interface) WUI operations according to guidelines stated in the Incident Response Pocket Guidance (IRPG), incident specific objectives and guidelines.
  • Skilled in record keeping practices.
  • Knowledgeable in computer applications involving word processing, data entry and/or standard report generation.
  • Able to perform standard office practices and procedures, including filing and the operation of standard office equipment.
  • Skilled in business letter writing in the standard format.
  • Knowledgeable of techniques for dealing with a variety of individuals from various socioeconomic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, that at times may be a stressful situation.
  • Skilled in recognizing and defining fire hazards and recommending effective corrective measures.
  • Able to conduct professional discussions with property owners, providing educational information on hazard fuels reduction.
  • Able to maintain accurate records for work performed.
  • Able to enforce ordinances and regulations with firmness, tact and impartiality.
  • Skilled in performing residential as well as commercial inspections.
  • Able to learn a variety of fuels reduction and firefighting methods, tools, and equipment.
  • Skilled in analyzing situations quickly and reach logical conclusions in emergencies.
  • Skilled in reading and following street, and wilderness maps.
  • Able to read and comprehend law, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in the English language both verbally and in writing.

Physical Demands:

  • Work hours will normally involve 40-hour work weeks, may be variable and may include overnight shifts, weekends, evenings, and/or holidays.
