The Senior Mine Planning Engineer is responsible for developing and optimizing short-, medium-, and long-term mine plans to support project development and future operational readiness. The role leads pit optimization, engineering studies, and cost assessments that maximize Net Present Value (NPV) and inform project budgeting and design. Collaboration with geology, processing, land, permitting, and environmental teams is required to deliver integrated mine plans aligned with project objectives and sustainability commitments.
RoleAccountabilities
- Develop, maintain, and optimize short, medium, and long-term mine plans including mine development, overburden stripping, reclamation, waste dump design, stockpile layouts, and haulage plans to support project development and construction readiness.
- Support a quality-driven mine planning process by contributing technical expertise from concept studies through detailed designs during the mine construction phase.
- Drive pit optimization by conducting economic and technical analyses that maximize NPV and provide inputs into the annual project budgeting process.
- Lead mine engineering and efficiency studies by identifying improvement opportunities, evaluating alternatives, and implementing initiatives that improve mine plan designs and reduce project costs.
- Collaborate regularly with mine technical teams across multiple project sites to ensure consistency and integration in mine planning approaches.
- Prepare and maintain mineral reserve and resource estimates, including technical documentation under SEC SK-1300 standards.
- Prepare and review Technical Report Summary (TRS) ensuring detailed, accurate, and compliant reporting per SEC SK-1300 requirements.
- Work with the Mine Engineering and Planning Manager, SVP of Projects, Processing Manager, Geology/Exploration, Land Management, and other disciplines to translate geological block models into executable mining plans.
- Convert resources into economic ore reserves by applying sound engineering judgment and supporting long-term project feasibility.
- Provide technical input to permitting processes and support regulatory compliance to align mine plans with federal and state requirements.
- Develop and update reclamation plans and cost estimates to ensure alignment with environmental and closure standards.
- Assist with land management activities by providing technical analysis and support for property planning, acquisition, or reclamation tasks as required.
- Experience with mine planning software platforms (Data Mine, Mine Sight, or Vulcan); willingness to learn current platform.
- Experience with mine optimization software (NPV Scheduler or Whittle).
- Experience with Autodesk/AutoCAD is preferred.
- Preferred experience with ESRI-Arc View and Arc Map for surveying, GIS, land, and permitting.
- Detailed organizational, planning, and analytical skills.
- Ability to mentor junior engineers.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Geology, Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related discipline.
- Advanced degree or related certifications preferred (e.g., Project Management Certificate, CAT Equipment Management Certificate).
- Microsoft Office Suite proficiency.
- Professional Engineer (PE) designation or eligibility preferred.
- Minimum five (5) years related mining experience with at least three (3) years of mine planning experience.
- Familiarity with Environmental Reclamation standards and practices to ensure no environmental harm from mining, including tailings storage.
- Knowledge of heavy equipment capabilities and safe operation in surface mining.
- Strong aptitude for surface mine planning, engineering processes, and geology.
- Problem-solving skills with a track record of delivering results on multidisciplinary teams.
- Self-motivated with an investigative mindset; driven to help the organization achieve goals.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Must have a valid driver s license to operate a company vehicle to and from project sites.
This is a full-time exempt position. Typical hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Evening and weekend work may be required as duties demand. Travel and other requirements as per operational needs.
CompensationBase Salary Range $110,000 - $130,000
